MAASIN CITY DIFFERENTLY ABLED ATHLETES WIN 13 GOLDS IN THE 2013 NATIONAL PARA GAMES By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Wed, 27 Mar 2013 ![]() All five athletes sent by the City of Maasin to the 2013 National Para Games won a total of 21 medals with 13 gold medals, 5 silver medals, and 3 bronze medals. The Games was participated in by more than 1000 athletes from 17 regions sponsored by the Philippine Sports Association for the Differently Abled (PHILSPADA) at Sta. Cruz. Laguna last March 16-22, 2013. The Maasin City delegation was part of the Eastern Visayas team of Region 8. The 2nd National Para Games will be a venue for the selection of athletes for the SEA Para Games at Myanmar. The most bemedalled athlete of Maasin City was Rochelle Octera who garnered five gold medals in all events she participated. Octera was champion in 400 m dash, discus throw, 200 m dash, 100 m dash, and shot put for hearing impaired athletes. Jonald Gelsano won the gold in shot put, javelin throw, discus throw, and silver in long jump for the hearing impaired. Brix Brian Espinosa got four golds in 400 m dash, long jump, 100 m dash, and 200 m dash, silver in javelin throw, and bronze in shot put and discus throw for the hearing impaired. Billy Joe Abinon got the gold in 800 m dash, and silver in 100 m dash, 200 m dash, and 400 m dash for the hearing impaired. Daniel Abrio won the bronze medal in javelin throw. Their coach was Ricardo Demeterio and their chaperons were Maasin City Special Education teachers Marilit Sanchez and Erlin Joy Vanzuela. The five athletes were given due recognition during the flag ceremony last Monday at the Maasin City Gym. P.S.
