Suarez Obliterates Avila in One-Round Blitz to Capture WBO International Crown (Photos) By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sun, 19 Jul 2026  SAN JOSE, CA -- The heat inside the Orange Show Events Center in San Bernardino, California was already a stifling 92°F, but Charly Suarez brought a devastating fire of his own. In a performance defined by absolute urgency, the Philippines’ WBO No. 1 ranked featherweight contender needed just 151 seconds to utterly dismantle American Manuel Avila, forcing a referee stoppage at the 2:31 mark of the very first round to claim the vacant WBO International super featherweight title. From the opening bell, Suarez fought like a man with no time to waste. He immediately went to work, piercing Avila’s guard with stiff, punishing jabs to the head and body. Avila, a seasoned veteran boasting a 26-2-1 resume, was returning from a 14-month layoff—and Suarez ensured it was a nightmare homecoming. As the opening round progressed, Suarez unleashed a pair of thunderous right hands to the head that rattled the American. Moments later came the finisher: a brutal, pinpoint right hand that crashed directly onto Avila's chin. The impact staggered Avila, sending him crashing to the canvas on a bended knee, visibly shaken and severely hurt. With this explosive statement, Suarez improves his unblemished record to 19-0 (11 KOs) and sends a terrifying warning shot directly across the bow of reigning WBO World Champion Emanuel Navarrete. Suarez is a man possessed by a quest for redemption. The boxing world remembers May of last year in San Diego, where a highly controversial 8th-round stoppage allowed Navarrete to escape with his title on the scorecards. The referee ruled a severe cut on Navarrete was due to an accidental headbutt; however, a subsequent review by the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) definitively proved the cut was caused by a legal Suarez punch. While the WBO mandated a rematch, Navarrete has spent his time bypassing the directive, opting instead for a unification bout with IBF champion Eduardo Nunez. Whispers in the industry now suggest Navarrete is aiming even higher, eyeing a massive three-belt unification showdown with WBC champion O'Shaquie Foster. But Suarez is no longer waiting in the shadows. Now backed by the influential and legendary promoter Sampson Lewkowicz—who expertly engineered this stay-busy showcase—the Filipino powerhouse has proven he cannot be ignored. Navarrete can run, and he can look toward other belts, but Charly Suarez just reminded the entire super featherweight division that he is the storm brewing right on their doorstep.
