Cabungcag, Asuela capture 1st NCFP/SCOOP-Bacolod chess tilt By Jerome S. Galunan Jr. PhilBoxing.com Mon, 11 Mar 2013 Escalante City-native Manilyn Cabungag and Ellan Asuela of Bacolod City emerged champions in the Kiddies U12 and Non-Titled Open divisions, respectively, of the just-concluded 1st National Chess Federation of the Philippines?Sports Communicators Organization of the Philippines ? Bacolod, Inc. Chess Tournament held March 9-10, 2013 at the New City Mall, De La Rama Building, in Bacolod City. Cabungcag, who also won the recent NCFP 12-under Age Group Chess Tournament at Gaisano City Mall, notched 4.5 points (17.0 BH) to take home P1,200 cash prize and a medal while Estella Marie Andador of Talisay City settled for first runner-up with 4.5 points (13.5 BH). Andador went home with P800 cash incentives and a medal. Meanwhile, Lou Faye Domingo earned 4.0 points to finish second runner-up and pocketed P500 and a medal as Elaine Santiago (3.0 points ? 15.5 BH.) ended at third runner-up to receive a cash award of P300 and a medal. Settled for the fifth to tenth places and who received consolation prizes of P200 each include: (5) Kenneth Ballo-allo ? 3.0, (6) Christian Lim ? 3.0, (7) Edward Sune ? 3.0, (8) Steven Montenid ? 3.0, (9) Krizzia Nepomuceno ? 2.5, and (10) Cedrik Severino ? 2.5. On the other hand, Asuela garnered a total of 5.0 points (23.0 BH.) to capture the non-masters category title and took home P4,000 cash prize and a trophy while Ted Ian Montoyo finished behind with 5.0 points (22.0 BH.) and pocketed P2,000 and a trophy as Michael Occido for the second runner-up honors with 5.0 points (21.0 BH.) and received P1,000 and a trophy. Asuela?s victory is, likewise, an excellent preparation for him as he gets ready for the upcoming 13th Bangkok Chess Club Open 2013 slated April 14-21 at the Dusit Thani Pattaya Resort in Bangkok, Thailand. Meanwhile, those who finished fourth to tenth places and received P300 each and individual medals, include: (4) Raymund dela Pe?a ? 4.5, (5) Eric Abanco ? 4.5, (6) Henry Taglucop ? 4.0, (7) Jordaine Tupaz ? 4.0, (8) Franz Andador, (9) Josevito Tapulgo ? 4.0, and Edgar dela Pe?a ? 4.0. Henry James Toga, SCOOP-Bacolod vice president and tournament program director, stressed that the main objective of initiating the said event is to further promote camaraderie among the chess players in Bacolod and in the province as well as help unite chess clubs in Negros Occidental by breaking the barriers that hindered the development of the sports in the province for many years, and to establish a harmonious atmosphere in the chess community. He further disclosed that a long-term chess program is presently on the planning stage, hoping to benefit the chess community in the province in the future. Aside from being sanctioned by NCFP, the tournament is likewise supported by federation chairman Prospero Pichay, executive director Grand Master Jayson Gonzales, vice president for the Visayas, Rep. Neri Colmenares of Bayan Muna Partylist, Negros Occidental coordinator Edwin Llamo and Bacolod City coordinator Sonny Pasco. Sponsoring the event include New City Mall, SM City-Bacolod, Merci Pasalubong and Meliton Petron - Talisay. The tournament was also in cooperation with Bacolod City Chess Society headed by Ted Ian Montoyo, National Chess Academy led by Leo Romitman, and Negros Chess Society of Philip Caudilla.
