DONAIRE?S PREDICTION WAS RIGHT; MIKEY GARCIA MAULS SALIDO TO WIN FEATHERWEIGHT TITLE

PhilBoxing.com

WBO/Ring Magazine and WBC Diamond Belt super bantamweight champion Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire?s prediction that his stable-mate, friend and trainer Robert Garcia?s younger brother Miguel Angel ?Mikey? Garcia would beat Orlando ?Siri? Salido and win the WBO featherweight title proved right.

Donaire had toyed with the idea of moving up in weight after WBO president Francisco ?Paco? Valcarcel had said that the classy Donaire would beat Salido if he decided to go after the Mexican?s title but Donaire said there was no way Salido would beat Garcia and he would never fight his friend.

The undefeated Garcia (31-0, 26 KO?s) looked terrific when he battered Salido (39-12-2, 27 KO?s) at New York?s Madison Square Garden but was denied a knockout or TKO win and had to settle for a eighth round technical decision after his nose was broken in what some ringsiders felt was a deliberate head-butt by Salido in round eight which referee Benjy Esteves Jr ruled as accidental.

Garcia couldn?t breathe and the ringside doctor examined Garcia after which the fight was stopped.

The lanky Garcia was way ahead on the scorecards of all three judges when the fight was stopped with two judges, John Stewart and Julie Lederman scoring it 79-69 and the third judge Don Ackerman having Garcia ahead 79-70.

Garcia dropped Salido twice in the opening round with precise left hooks and once more in rounds three and four with a stinging uppercut in the process demonstrating his punching power.

Meantime, a former sparring partner of eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao, junior middleweight Glen Tapia proved far too good and strong for Ayi Bruce of Ghana who fights out of New York. scoring a 2nd round TKO in one of the undercard fights.

Tapia dropped Bruce with a ripping body shot in round two and went after him with a flurry of vicious punches as Bruce lay trapped against the ropes forcing the referee to call a halt.

Tapia?s undefeated run moves to 17-0 with 10 knockouts while Bruce, according to boxrec.com dropped to 22-9 with 14 knockouts with Tapia, the New Jersey fighter emerging as a real prospect.
