SALUD FEARS PACQUIAO COULD BE IN BIG TROUBLE

PhilBoxing.com

The eminent lawyer Rudy Salud, founding secretary general of the WBC says he fears that Filipino national treasure Manny Pacquiao could be in "big trouble" if he decides to fight for Top Rank promoter Bob Arum and turns his back on the seven
fight contract he signed in September with Golden Boy Promotions of Oscar De La Hoya.

Salud said that based on the facts as disclosed in various reports and internet stories, if Pacquiao fights for Arum under the announced agreement between Top Rank and Manny Pacquiao Promotions, it would be "an outright breach of contract." Salud
said that if the reported four-year contract with Arum was signed after the November 18 fight with Morales then Arum was guilty of "outright tampering and tortuous interference."

Arum said he planned a fight for Pacquiao at the newly opened Wynn Hotel and Casino in Macau in March next year and that there is no injunction that could be enforced there and Pacquiao was definitely fighting. But Salud disagreed. He said "the law can reach out that far if Golden Boy can prove his contract. He can enforce it anywhere in the world through a complicated legal procedure." Salud said the consequence of this would be that Pacquiao?s next fight "will be delayed and he loses time which is gold, if he is not able to fight."

Salud referred to the human rights cases filed against the late President Marcos in a Honolulu, US court which passed judgement even though the violations were committed in the Philippines and not the US while the decision was enforced in the
Philippines. Reacting to Arum?s challenge to Golden Boy to sue for damages Salud warned that should Pacquiao fight under Arum, the veteran Top Rank promoter would "get soaked in the US for everything he has."

Arum accused Golden Boy of coercing Pacquiao into signing the contract claiming he had a long flight and Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer and De La Hoya "grabbed him, took him to a restaurant and threw a contract in front of him" and allegedly
ignored Pacquiao?s request to talk to his lawyer Franklin "Jing" Gacal. Arum also pointed out that Pacquiao "never even graduated from grade school. He signed the contract and took the money."

Schaefer denied that any pressure was applied on Pacquiao and said both sides were happy with the deal under which the fighter will make more money than with Top Rank. It was also revealed when the story broke that Gacal was in the meeting along with trainer Freddie Roach.

Schaefer also took issue with Arum?s claim that the contract for the Morales fight included a provision that prevented Pacquiao from signing with another promoter until after the fight saying it was a standard provision in Arum?s contracts and
only precluded Pacquiao from signing another fight agreement. He also pointed out that Pacquiao signed a promotional deal with Gary Shaw before the rematch with Morales which was promoted by Top Rank. Schaefer asked "why was it OK then?"

Salud said he was "saddened by the situation because wherever Pacquiao goes, to Golden Boy or to Arum, the other party will complain and create problems for the other promoter and will include Pacquiao." Salud expressed the hope that De La
Hoya and Arum can come to some kind of an agreement together with Pacquiao and co-promote or whatever, otherwise the one in the middle gets trampled and that?s our national treasure and I don?t want anything like that to happen to Manny. But it will happen if there is no common agreement between Arum and De La Hoya."

Salud said they would have to settle their controversy in court which will have to involve Pacquiao and put him in a freezer at the least but hopefully not as long as things are adjudicated in our country because its much faster in the US.
