COMPLETE COTTO ? TROUT UNDERCARD RESULTS FROM NEW YORK By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Dec 2012 New York, NY ? The Mecca of Boxing hosts the last major boxing event of The Big Apple this year with their staging of Miguel Cotto vs. Austin Trout. The 12 round championship fight airs over Showtime Network and is broadcasted live from Madison Square Garden, considered as second home to Puerto Rico?s Cotto. Here are the complete results of the eight undercard fights here at The Madison Square Garden. THOMPSON VS. AGUSTAMA Undefeated John Thompson 9-0 (3 KOs)of nearby Newark, New Jersey kept his record intact with an imposing 6 round UD win over Eli Agustama 6-5 (3 KOs) of Port Au Prince, Haiti in the night?s opening bout. Thompson controlled the fight with excellent jabbing and movement against his opponent who had a hard time getting through his jabs. The judges scores were two identical marks of 59-55 and a 60-54 shutout on one. GOMEZ VS. HERNANDEZ Eddie Gomez 11-0 (8 KOs) of Bronx, NY outpointed fellow undefeated Super Welterweight prospect Luis Hernandez 9-0 (5 KOs) of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico in six rounds. Gomez out punched the hesitant Hernandez who elected to became a passive fighter for most of the night. The New Yorker dominated his opponent majority of the fight by being the active and aggressive fighter of the two. The official scores for Gomez are 58-55 and 59-54 twice for the now 12-0 fighter. DIAZ VS. SANCHEZ New Brunswick, New Jersey?s own, Jorge Diaz 16-1 (10 KOs) scored a perfect grade on the score cards at ringside to defeat Houston?s Victor Sanchez 3-4-1 in an upbeat six round Featherweight contest. Diaz scored a knockdown in the initial salvo via a combination that floored Sanchez. The game Sanchez beat the mandatory 8 count and engaged Diaz in a brawl afterwards. The two delighted the building crowd at this New York landmark with a toe-to toe battle in the 4th round. Diaz was the recipient of a 60-53 grade from all three judges after the exciting fight. PEREZ VS. CARCAMO Michael Perez 17-1-1 (10 KOs) of Newark, New Jersey engaged Obregon Mexico?s Fernando Carcamo 10-4 (7 KOs) in a slugfest in front of an appreciative crowd that is slowly filling the stadium. Perez dropped Carcamo with a pair of left hooks in the opening round of the fight and looked to finish his opponent after the knockdown. Carcamo survived the scary round and returned the favor by dropping Perez with a left hook counter in round number 2. The two then fought a hard and bruising 8 round lightweight bout that saw a see-saw action between the two fighters until Perez scored another knockdown in the 8th and final round with a short right. Carcamo got up and finished the fight but those two knockdowns went against him in the judges? score cards. Perez won the bout with a 78-71 card and two scores of 77-72 to move up to 18 wins. FONTANEZ VS.ARCOS Undefeated Lightweight Jeffrey Fontanez 8-0 (7 KOs) of Caguas, Puerto Rico demolished Pedro Arcos 12-2-1 (9 KOs) of Tijuana, Mexico in two rounds in front of a predominant Puerto Rican crowd in The Garden. Fontanez dropped the hapless Arcos three times, first with a left hook in the initial round followed by two knockdowns in the 2nd. A right cross flattened the Mexican boxer in the early stage of the round and that was repeated again with a vicious left hook that landed squarely in his face. Referee Tony Chiarantano stopped the fight right away as officials rushed to the fallen boxer. Fontanez improved his record to nine wins and an impressive eight of them by knockout. The official time of stoppage was 1:23 of round 2. MELENDEZ VS. WINCHESTER Jorge Melendez 24-2-1 (23 KOs) of Caguas Puerto Rico rocked James Winchester 15-6 (5 KOs) of Greensboro NC in the 3rd round of their scheduled 8 round Super Welterweight fight and finished the job a round after that. A right hook of Melendez hit Winchester in the temple and forced him to the canvass. Winchester recovered and did enough to survive the 3rd but his opponent aggressively pursued him in the next round. Referee Ricky Gonzalez was forced to stop the fight after Winchester was unable to defend himself from Melendez?s flurry of punches. Referee Gonzalez called the fight off at the 54 second mark of the fourth round and that gave the favored fighter his 25th victory. JACOBS VS. FITZPATRICK One of Brooklyn?s favorite fighter, Danny Jacobs 23-1 (20 KOs) put a New York beating on Chris Fitzpatrick 15-2 (6 KOs) of Cleveland, OH in front of an adoring hometown crowd. Jacobs scored early in the fight with accurate jabbing and body work against his opponent. He then increased his effort in the 3rd by letting his hands go against a defensive Fitzpatrick. The former Cancer survivor landed powerful punches on his foe in rounds 4 and 5 that Fitzpatrick has no answer for. Fitzpatrick had enough after the 5th and refused to come out of his corner after the round. This was Jacobs? second fight and second victory after a making a comeback from the disease that sidelined him for more than a year. He improves to 24 wins and 21 knockouts with this TKO win in the 5th. VELEZ VS. SANCHEZ II The pro Puerto Rican audience here at the venue got a special treat before Miguel Cotto goes in action here at The Garden. Jayson Velez 19-0 (14 KOs) of Juncos, Puerto Rico dismantled a game but outmatched Salvador Sanchez II 30-4-3 (18 KOs) of Santiago, Tianquiestenco , Mexico in three impressive rounds. Velez blasted Sanchez with both hands in the 2nd round of the bout before the main event. Sanchez initially took it well but succumbed to the pressure of Velez?s punches. Sanchez was dropped in the last seconds of the 2nd, courtesy of strong combinations from the Puerto Rican fighter. Velez finished the job to the delight of the crowd in the succeeding round with a vicious left hook that dropped Sanchez yet again. Referee Harvey Dock halted the fight at the 38 second mark of the round after witnessing the abuse that Sanchez was receiving.
