COTTO-TROUT BATTLE HAS THE MAKINGS OF A CLASSIC

PhilBoxing.com

The battle between Puerto nRico?s Miguel Cotto and Mexico?s WBA junior middleweight champion Austin Trout has all the makings of a classic.

The fight will take place at New York?s famed Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Manila Time and will be telecast on AKTV IBC 13 over bits popular weekly boxing show ?BIG TIME BAKBAKAN? at 2:00 p.m.

The fierce rivalry between Puerto Rico and Mexico was in place long before the storied rivalry between Mexico and the Philippines fueled mainly by the exploits of ?Fighter of the Decade? Manny Pacquiao who earned the nickname ?The Mexicutioner? after battering a succession of Mexican legends including Marco Antonio Barrera and Erik ?El Terrible? Morales.

Cotto has a record of 30 knockouts with 37 wins and three defeats, one against Pacquiao who won the WBO welterweight title with a 12th round TKO in which he dropped the Puerto Rican a couple of times prior to the stoppage.

Trout is five years younger than Cotto and is undefeated with a record of 25-0 with 14 knockouts.

The Mexican southpaw will also enjoy a decided height and reach advantage but for his part Cotto has faced opponents at a much more elite level including Pacquiao, Floyd Mayweather Jr and Antonio Margarito.

Cotto gave Mayweather Jr a much harder time than he gave Pacquiao when he faced the undefeated American last May and dropped a twelve round decision.

SuperSport?s Ron Jackson reports that Cotto first won ?world? titles at light-welterweight and has never fought above 69.85 kg. Trout has fought at 69.85 through most of his career and has even gone up to middleweight (72.58 kg).

The challenger has held the WBO light-welterweight, WBA and WBO welterweight, and WBA light-middleweight belts in an 11-year career.

Trout won the WBA belt on February 5 last year when he outpointed Rigoberto Alvarez by wide margins. In June, he retained the title against David Alonso Lopez, who suffered his first loss in six years.

Trout has good ring craft and uses his southpaw jab to good effect. However, he is up against a slick veteran who could provide a true test of his skills.
