MARES BEATS MORENO, WANTS DONAIRE NEXT

PhilBoxing.com

Mexicos?s Abner Mares (25-0-1, 14 KO?s) successfully defended his WBC super bantamweight title with a unanimous twelve round decision over former WBA bantamweight champion Anselmo Moreno (33-2-1, 12 KO?s) but the judges scorecards didn?t reflect the closeness of the bout held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

In a fight that was telecast on the popular weekly boxing show ?Big Time Bakbakan? over AKTV IBC 13, Mares got the nod of judges David Sutherland and Marty Denkin 116-110 but the third judge James Jen-Kin turned in a ridiculous 120-106 shutout for Mares.

Shortly after the decision was announced Mares called out reigning WBO champion Nontito ?The Filipino? Flash Donaire who defends his title against Mexican warrior Jorge ?Travieso? Arce at the Honda Center in Houston, Texas on December 15.

Mares was quoted by boxingscene.com saying ? I want to fight Nonito Donaire . That?s the only guy to fight. We want to fight the best. We want to continue to step mup and fight the est. I think its up to Nonito?s promoters.?

Therein lies the problem because Mares is handled by Golden Boy Promotions and Donaire by Bob Arum?s Top Rank and their differences run deep.

However, Arum recently told the Manila Standard that the contract of Mares with Golden Boy as well as Showtime runs out at the end of the year and if Mares doesn?t renew his contract, the fight could be made even as Arum maintained that such a fight deserves to be on HBO Sports.

Mares appeared to dominate the first half of the bout with his aggressiveness and dropped Moreno with a hard right cross near the end of the fifth round.

Just like in his fight against Joseph Agbeko where Russell Mora was the referee, Mares was warned on several occasions for fouls including low blows and punches at the back of the head but referee Raul Caiz Jr didn?t penalize Mares but slapped a one point deduction on Moreno in round eleven for pulling down the head of Mares.

Boxing writer Roco Morales who was at ringside took a dig at Caiz Jr claiming ?he did his best Russell Mora impression.?
