NBA -- Lakers end preseason at 0-8
By Joan Secuya-Medida PhilBoxing.com Sat, 27 Oct 2012
SAN FRANCISCO -- The word "winless" normally doesn't belong in the same sentence with the Los Angeles Lakers, who has won 17 championships since joining the NBA in 1948. But that's exactly what happened to the Lakers -- winless -- when their preseason schedule culminated on Thursday night with a 94-82 loss to the Sacramento Kings at the Valley View Casino Center in San Diego.
Kobe Bryant sat out with a bruised and strained right foot but center Dwight Howard played in his second consecutive game as a Laker, this time collecting nine points and eight rebounds in 23 minutes of workout. David Ebanks topscored with 14 points for the Lakers, who shot just 28-of-66 from the field (42.4 percent) and a poor 6-for-19 from 3-point range (31.9 percent).
With the onset of the regular season looming, Lakers' starters Pau Gasol and Steve Nash played sparingly, pooling just 13 points, six rebounds and six assists between them. Antawn Jamison, another Lakers free agency acquisition, saw 23 minutes of action and scored two points on 1-of-3 shooting. Metta World Peace, previously known as Ron Artest, had a five-point effort in 21 minutes.
Unlike the struggling Lakers, the soaring Kings, who finsihed the exhibition season with a 5-2 won-lost record, hit their familiar stride. They converted 39 of 86 field goals (45.3 percent) and got 20 points each from big man DeMarcus Cousins and speedy guard Isaiah Thomas. The Kings misfired from beyond the three-point arc -- 3-of-14 -- but they missed only three of 16 free throws.
The Lakers hope to recapture their old winning ways when they open their 67th NBA season campaign by hosting the Dallas Mavericks on October 30 at Staples Center in downtown Los Angeles. The Kings, meanwhile, hope to take their momentum into the regular season which begins for them with a road trip to the United Center in Chicago against the Derrick Rose-less Bulls.
