NBA- Kobe shines in Lakers' loss By Joan Secuya-Medida PhilBoxing.com Thu, 18 Oct 2012 ![]() SAN FRANCISCO -- If there are lingering doubts about the readiness of Kobe Bryant heading into the upcoming 2012-13 NBA season, the franchise player obliterated it with a stellar 31-point effort Tuesday night at the Honda Center in Anaheim, Califoria. Bryant, who has three years left in his contract and has hinted at retirement down the road, swished 10-of-18 field goals including 4-of-6 beyond the 3-point arc. The 6-foot-6 five-time NBA champion also had five rebounds, a pair of assists and a lone steal. But the Black Mamba couldn't beat a Western Conference contender all by himself as the Los Angeles Lakers fell to the Utah Jazz in a 114-80 washout that left the retooled purple-and-gold franchise winless in four preseason assignments. Newly-acquired Dwight Howard rested his recently repaired back and did not suit up for action. He was joined in sick bay by big man Pau Gasol who also sat out due to fatigue. Steve Nash, who joined L.A. through free agency a short few weeks ago, reported for duty in limited 12 minutes and quickly tallied a forgettable 2 points and 1 assist. Jodie Meeks finished with 12 points and provided meaningful reinfocerment for the reeling Lakers. Unfortunately, Meeks and Kobe fought a hopeless cause as Metta World Peace, formerly Ron Artest, couldn't find any traction with a meager three-point effort..World Peace's abysmal -- 1-of-7 field goals and 0-4 on threes. And the rest of the Lakers were no better, shooting a horrendous 27-of-72 on field goals (37.5 percent) and 9-of-22 on treys. The Lakers also failed to convert six of their 23 free throws while getting hammered off the boards, 44-28, Gordon Hayward led the Jazz with 13 points. But unlike Kobe, Hayward got plenty of help as six of his fellow Jazz struck in double figures. Al Jefferson and Alec Burks chipped in 12 apiece while Derrick Favors, Enes Kanter, Marvin Williams and Rany Foye finished with 10 each.
