WBA HEAVYWEIGHT CHAMP POVETKIN DEFENDS TITLE VS EX CHAMP HASIM RAHMAN
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 25 Sep 2012

Undefeated WBA heavyweight champion Alexander Povetkin (24-0, 16 KO?s) will defend his title against former WBC, IBF and IBO champion Hasim Rahman (50-7-2, 41 KO?s) in Hamburg, Germany on Sunday, Manila Time, in a fight card that will be telecast on the popular weekly boxing show ?Big Time Bakbakan? over AKTV IBC 13.
It will be Rahman?s first fight since June last year and his first test against a top-rated opponent since December 13, 2008 when he lost to Wladimir Klitschko by a 7th round TKO.
Rahman is coming off a 6th round TKO of Galen Brown on June 11, 2011.
Questions have been asked about the condition of Rahman who is almost 40 years of age, as well as how he earned the mandatory challenger status.
However, while he is a huge underdog, Rahman, it must be remembered, shocked the world over eleven years ago when he knocked out Lennox Lewis in South Africa on April 21, 2001.
Rahman?s promoter Greg Cohen is upset over the lack of respect for the former world champion. He said ?They?ve been basically writing Hasim off since the start of the promotion? noting that his fighter ?is not even on the posters for this event. They?ve been making jokes and having fun but while they were doing that Hasim has been getting himself into fantastic shape.?
Povetkin is coming off a questionable performance against Marco Huck when he retained his title with a twelve round majority decision, and Rahman has indicated ?I know what I have to do and that is to knock him out. I know that when I?m at my best, no one can ntake my power and I will knock him (Povetkin) or anyone else out, period.
Rahman added, ?no fight at this leve; is easyt nut I know that I am one hundred percent prepared and so I am supremely confident.?
The former world champion predicted ? This fight will not go the distance. I will KO Povetkin on September 29.?
