BECKHAM BUMPED OFF FROM ENGLAND?S OLYMPIC FOOTBALL TEAM
By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 28 Jun 2012

Charismatic sports icon David Beckham has been bumped off the England football team to the 2012 London Olympic Games.
Although he took his failure to make the squad like a true sportsman it surely must have hurt since the 37 year old former England captain wanted to lead the team in the Olympics.
BBC Sport quoted Beckham who said ?Naturally I am very disappointed but there will be no bigger supporter of the team than me.?
Beckham added ?I would have been honored to have been part of this unique Team Great Britain squad. Like everyone I will be hoping they can win the gold.?
Beckham made coach Stuart Pearce?s shortlist of 35 players but didn?t make the 18-man cut as one of three players over the age of 23 allowed to compete in the Olympics.
The Times newspaper reported that Pearce had watched Beckham play for LA Galaxy ? the team that played the Philippine Azkals in Manila some months ago in which Beckham scored a trademark goal ? but selected Micah Richards ahead of Beckham.
Last January Beckham had said he would love to be captain. Adding ?I have led my country before and know how special it would be to lead them into the Olympics.?
Some three months later coach Pearce remarked that while Beckham ?has been a great ambassador that?s no guarantee he?ll get in the squad. I?m picking on form and merit alone.?
Apparently Beckham didn?t meet the criteria at least in the eyes of coach Pearce.
