Juanito Rubillar suffers tough loss in Florida

PhilBoxing.com

Kissimmee, Florida ? Juanito Rubillar?s game effort against Puerto Rican David Quijano 14-2-1 (9 KOs) was cut short in the 10th round of a scheduled twelve rounder after suffering a bad cut to his head due to an accidental clash of heads between the two fighters.

The veteran Juanito Rubillar 48-18-7 (23 KOs) of the Elorde stable of Paranaque City put up a gritty effort against his younger foe in bout that was telecast over Spanish TV network Telemundo in the continental United States.

Both fighters started slow in the early rounds of the fight. A straight right staggers Rubillar in the 3rd, pushing him across the ring. Quijano pounded on him but the Filipino was able to fend off his attacks and survived the round.

Rubillar returned the favor with a big right hook that stuns Quijano in the 4th round. Rubillar continued his efforts on the 5th and 6th rounds with fast combinations that landed on his opponent. His left hand started to find its mark on Quijano?s head on the 5th and a big left from the former WBC minimum titlist forced Quijano backwards in the 6th.

Both fighters figured in a good scrap in the 7th with the Filipino landing right hooks and the Puerto Rican countering with combinations of his own.

The 8th saw a halt in the action as Rubillar gets hit by Quijano?s head in his mouth. The action resumed with Rubillar chasing his foe across the ring as if awoken by that head butt.

The Davao Oriental born fighter pursued his opponent again in the 9th, landing good combinations on him. A right hook at the end of that combo landed squarely on Quijano?s head in the early part of that round.

Then the fateful 10th round came when another clash of head ensued for both fighters. This would leave a bad cut on Rubillar?s head which prompted the referee to call another pause on the fight. His wound was assessed by the ringside physician who deemed him unfit to continue the fight.

The fight went to the judges? cards after the fight was called off which saw Quijano winning by a slight margin. The three judges at ringside had the Puerto Rican ahead with three scores of 96-94 at the time of the stoppage. The win gave Quijano the vacant WBO Latino Super Flyweight belt while Rubillar suffered his 6th consecutive loss dating back to 2010.
