6th Fight: Randall Bailey scores stunning upset over Mike Jones to win IBF welterweight diadem

PhilBoxing.com

Las Vegas, NV - The night?s first upset of the night came in the fiery hands of Randall Bailey 42-7-1 ND (36 KO). The 6-1 underdog to unbeaten top dog Mike Jones 26-0(19 KO) did what he is known to do best. That is, to knockout his opponent which he did in a stunning fashion at the MGM Grand Garden Arena tonight.

Mike Jones was effective right from the start of the bell. He was the quicker and more mobile fighter against the older Bailey. But he was also uneasy and weary because Bailey would occasionally score hard rights on him. That would make Jones weary forcing him to box the former light welterweight champ. It would make for an unappealing fight which the crowd in the MGM would not appreciate.

The uninteresting action in the ring would continue until the 10th round when everything was erased by a single punch from Bailey. Jones initiated the action with a big right hand forcing Bailey backwards and then Bailey came out with a jab followed by a monster straight right which immediately floored Jones.

Jones survived the 8 count and the round and went to his corner stunned and bloodied. He would sit dazed in his stool as his corner tried desperately to revive and encouraged him. Then Bailey came out of his stool sensing fear and blood. He unleashed a vicious right uppercut that busted Jones? nose even more. Blood came out of it and so is his equilibrium forcing him in the canvass for the second time in the night. He tried to beat the count by referee Tony Weeks but he was so dizzy he can barely stand up from the count. Referee Tony Weeks halted the fight immediately upon witnessing Jones? condition. He stops it at the 2:52 mark of the 11th round.

Bailey wins his resurrection fight and the IBF welterweight belt against a highly favored fighter. He did not only score the biggest upset of the night so far but also the biggest win of his career.
