PROMISING ROBERTO GONZALES MAKES A TACTICAL MISTAKE AND GET?S KNOCKED OUT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Tue, 15 May 2012 One of the most promising young junior lightweights Roberto Gonzales made a tactical mistake of trying to slug it out with hard-hitting Ryan Sermona and paid a heavy price when he was knocked out in the 5th round and lost the IBF Pan Pacific Youth title in his hometown of Puerto Galera in Minodoro Oriental. Gonzales who was undefeated going into the fight where he was a prohibitive favorite out-boxed Sermona in the first two rounds using a stinging jab and excellent combinations to hammer the fighter from the stable of Gabriel ?Bebot? Elorde Jr. Round three saw Gonzales nail Sermona who tried to bulldoze his way in but was staggered by the hometown boy. With Sermona bleeding badly from a cut above the right eye caused by the punches of Gonzales, international referee Bruce McTavish asked the ringside doctor to check out Sermona who said he was ready to continue although Elorde said he feared the fight would be stopped.. Knowing he was well behind on points Sermona went for broke in round five with an all-out attack as Gonzales made the mistake of trying to slug it out and paid the price as Sermona caught Gonzales with a big left hand that dropped him. Referee McTavish told us later he didn?t even bother to count as Gonzales was out cold. With the win Sermona improves to 17-3 with 10 knockouts while Gonzales who suffered his first defeat and by a knockout at that dropped to 20-1 with 15 knockouts. Most fight observers felt Gonzales who is handled by promoter Elmer Anuran was too cocky and in the end learned a bitter lesson which is expected to open his eyes to the realities of the sport. Elorde conceded that Sermona ?got lucky? but stressed that his fighter who had former Philippine flyweight champion Anthony Villamor in his corner ?has a big heart and is a fighter.? He said Sermona spent one and a half months at the Teiken Gym in Tokyo serving as sparring partner for WBC super featherweight champion Takahiro Ao, the southpaw with a record of 23-2-1 with 10 knockouts.
