A call to address the ?imperfect? 10-9 in the 10-point must scoring system

PhilBoxing.com

The exciting and well applauded 4-round flyweight fight between Joseph Maranon and Emmanuel Sapo last Saturday evening, 12 May 2012, at D?Flash Ballroom, Elorde Sports Center in Paranaque City, Philippines ended in scorecards as a draw. The three judges submitted a uniform score of 38-38.

One judge scored the 1st and 2nd rounds 10-9 for Sapo who won those rounds with a slight edge over Maranon. He scored the 3rd and 4th rounds for Maranon who won those rounds a notch better than slightly with his harder shots finding the target cleanly and more often. The scores for the 3rd and 4th rounds were still 10-9. According to the total scores, Sapo and Maranon have identical total of 38 which made the fight a draw. But in this judge?s mind, Maranon should have won the fight 39-38 had the improved version of the 10-9 round been implemented.

The APPBRO (Association of Philippine Professional Boxing Ring Officials) had adopted a stand to be formally submitted for consideration by the Philippine Games and Amusements Board. The APPBRO stand reads:

?WHEREAS, in the 10-point must system of scoring a round, it is admitted by the worldwide boxing officials that a 10-9 score in a round has degrees of attainment, as follows:

A slight edge is scored 10-9
A moderate edge is still scored 10-9
A decisive edge short of a 10-8 round is still scored 10-9

?WHEREAS, unless this room for improvement in the scoring system is remedied, deserving boxers would continue to be deprived of a win in situations such as, but not limited to, the following fights which end in draws:

1. In a 4-round bout, each boxer wins two rounds where 3 rounds were closely contested while in a round, a boxer still gets a 10-9 score where he had a moderate edge over boxer B.

2. In a 4-round bout, each boxer wins two rounds where in the 3 rounds, the edge was only slight but in 1 of the rounds, one boxer decisively won over the other though still short of a 10-8 score.

3. In a 4-round bout, a boxer wins two close rounds while boxer B wins two rounds moderately.

4. In a 4-round bout, a boxer wins moderately two rounds while boxer B wins two rounds decisively though still short of the 10-8 scores.

?WHEREAS, to approach, if not attain, perfection in rendering fair and just scores to the boxers, the present 10-9 score be further improved to:

A slight edge be scored 10-9.5
A moderate edge be scored 10-9
A decisive edge short of a 10-8 round be scored 10-8.5

Had this improvement of the present 10-9 scoring been in effect, the judge would have scored the 1st and 2nd rounds 10-9.5 for Emmanuel Sapo and the 3rd and 4th rounds 10-9 for Joebert Maranon. The total scores for the 4 rounds would have been 39-38 in favour of Joebert Maranon. Maranon could have gone home last Saturday night with a win instead of a draw in his fight record.

This judge asked his fellow judges who judged the fight as to who had really won had the improved scoring system been adopted. One judge said he believed the fight was really a draw. The other judge said he felt Maranon was the better man. Therefore, the fight should been won by Joebert Maranon by a majority decision.

How many more Joebert Maranons have to be contented with a draw instead of a deserved win? This depends on the when the concerned scoring officials worldwide would implement an improvement to the present imperfect 10-9 score in the 10-point must system.
