NBA - LeBron James to be named MVP on Sunday
By Joan Secuya-Medida PhilBoxing.com Sat, 12 May 2012

LOS ANGELES -- Love him or hate him, LeBron James is the best player in the NBA.
According to ESPN sources, the 6-foot-9, 250-pound Miami Heat forward was chosen by the media voters as this season's Most Valuable Player (MVP). NBA commissioner David Stern will hand James the Maurice Podoloff Trophy this Sunday afternoon at the American Airlines Arena, where the Heat will host the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference semifinals.
Although Miami flaunts a pair of other superstars in Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh, James is inarguably the fulcrum of their offense and defense. James, a high school phenom who took the NBA by storm in 2003, averaged 27.1 points, 7.9 rebounds and 6.2 assists per game in the regular season, helping Miami finish with a 46-20 record and clinch the No.2 seed in the East.
In the playoffs thus far, James is just as lethal, averaging 27.8 points, 5.1 rebounds and 4.5 assists in five games as the Heat eliminated the injury-ravaged New York Knicks in their best-of-7 opening round series.
The official votes have not been revealed yet, but James beat other notable candidates such as Kobe Bryant of the Los Angeles Lakers, Chris Paul of the Los Angeles Clippers, Tony Parker of the San Antonio Spurs and Kevin Durant of the Oklahoma City Thunder, the NBA's scoring champion the last three years.
It's James' third MVP award in four seasons. He joins a very elite list of NBA greats who have snatched at least three MVP titles --- Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Bill Russell, Wilt Chamberlain, Larry Bird, Moses Malone, Magic Johnson and Michael Jordan.
Last year's MVP, Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls, did not seriously contend for the award this season. Saddled with five different injuries, Rose missed 27 regular season games this season and he tore his anterior cruciate ligament in Game 1 of the Bulls-Sixers Round 1 series last April 28.
