Roach at SCOOP sa Kamayan

PhilBoxing.com

The chief trainer of World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao warned that junior welterweight titleholder Tim Bradley should not be taken lightly as he will be out to strip the Filipino ring icon of his 147-pound division belt when they meet June 9 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

?Bradley might be an up-and-coming fighter, a new campaigner, but I expect him to be very focused when he faces Manny on June 9,? Roach said during Friday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.

?Remember, he promised to destroy Manny and he?s been doing everything to attain that purpose by training daily since the fight was announced two months ago,? the 52-year-old five-time Trainer of the Year honoree of the Boxing Writers Association of America told his audience in the well-attended forum sponsored by Powerade, AKTV and FILA sports wear.

?He?s never been KOed and has been announcing daily what he intends to do with Manny. We?ll I suppose that is his way of promoting himself, but we?ll see,? Roach, who came to the session accompanied by Filipino conditioning coach Marvin Somodio, said.

Pacquiao himself was invited to grace the session for the first time since he last showed up seven years ago, but failed to make it as he was too tired after a long trip from Baguio to Manila
Egging to see his four children with wife Jinkee, whom he had not seen in the entire three-week duration of the Baguio camp,
Pacquiao decided to proceed to the family residence in Sta. Rosa in Laguna.

Speaking of the recently ended Baguio training camp, Roach, who hails from Boston but is now based in Los Angeles, said he is satisfied with the results and that whatever still lacks in Pacquiao?s arsenal will be address when training shifts to the Wild Card Gym in L.A.

?Manny?s in between 40 to 50 percent ready at the moment, but he?ll be ready to reclaim that pound-for-pound best fighter title,? Roach assured, belying reports that the eight-division champion is on the way down.
?To those who are saying that Manny is all done, washed up and too old, well, they?re mistaken. They based their opinion perhaps on Manny?s last outing against (Juan Manuel) Marquez, but there?s no comparison,? he said.

When asked how the fight will go, Roach said it will not last 12 rounds with Pacquiao emerging as winner.

Somodio, who took over the strength and conditioning aspect of preparations from Alex Ariza, who left for the U.S, two weeks ago, for his part, said Pacquiao has been doing well in training and is in near perfect condition.

?Maganda na ang kondisyon ni Manny. The muscles are back to where they should be. ? the 28-year-old prot?g? of Roach said. ?Endurance? Well, it?s there all the time naman, kelangan lang ma-revive and that?s we?ve been doing,?

Even the leg cramps which Pacquiao blamed in his near loss to Marquez, according to Somodio, has totally been healed, same as the shoulder pain he?s been complaining since two weeks ago.

Pacquiao was scheduled to work on the mitts as well as conditioning exercises yesterday. Sparring resumes today with a seven-round session against Ruslan Provodnikov (4 rounds) and Rustam Nugaev (3 rounds).

Pacquiao and party leave for L.A. tonight on board a Philippine flight Saturday.
