TEAM PACQUIAO WRAPS UP IN BAGUIO

PhilBoxing.com

BAGUIO CITY ? World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao officially ended the first leg of his preparation for his coming title fight with undefeated Timothy Bradley here yesterday.

Six-round give-and-take engagements with Russians Ruslan Provodnikov and Rustam Nugaev completed the 20-round sparring portion of training at the Shape Up Boxing Gym at the Cooyeesan Hotel along the zigzagging Naguiian Road.

Pacquiao, who is staking his 147-pound division title against world junior-welterweight titlist Bradley on June 9, and members of his coaching staff, headed by Freddie Roach, assessed the results of three week camp as satisfactory.

?I?m not yet 100 percent, but I believe we?ve done what we?re trying to achieve here in Baguio,? Pacquiao told this writer at the before the start of final day here.
?We?ve gained 50 percent of what our target in at the day of the fight,? her assessed. ?Nakuha na natin ang kalahati ng dapat makuha in all aspects of preparations at when the day of the fight comes, 100 percent na.?

?Yun naman ang purpose of scheduling the training calendar step-by-step,? he explained. ?You get something in the earlier stage then advance a level higher in the next.?
Roach agreed, saying, ?We always had a good start and here is no difference. This is only the beginning. We gained a little of everything here, then figure out the projected total results when we get to L.A.?

As in last Tuesday?s session, the routine roadwork held in the morning was cancelled in order to give the eight-division belt-owner a respite in preparation for the next stop of the buildup program ar the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

?The past week was tough for Manny. He came back from a long layoff, but he?s been getting better and better as days gone by,? he reasoned out.

?I need to give him rest. He needs good sleep because we?re traveling long to Manila tonight after training the resume working out tomorrow at Manny?s place (MP Gym in Sampaloc),? the five-time ?Trainer of the Year? said.

While none of the many distractions that marked their previous preparations, still Pacquiao has been lacking in sleep due to the nightly Bible-preaching activities, which Roach himself considered to have affected the regimen at very minimum.

?Sparring resumes Saturday afternoon at the same place then we fly to the U.S. that same night,? he said.
As to Pacquiao?s physical condition, Marvin Somodio, who has taken over the job of getting him in shape from Alex Ariza, attested that he is fast getting back his strength and stamina.

?Wala naming problema sa conditioning aspect,? Somodio said. ?Alam naman ni Manny i-kondisyon ang sarili nya. Konting guidance lang at reminder kung may kulang o may sobra.?
?Alam naman natin si Manny, kapag ginanahan, banat nang banat until he grew unreasonably tired,? the 28-year-old former amateur fighter and member of Shape Up coaching staff added.

?Sinasabi ko kasi sa kanya we have to do the things we have to do, otherwise, walang mangyayaring maganda,?

?A factor that made Roach happer. ?That?s one of the most beautiful things that happened in the camp. While before Manny doesn?t often listened to Alex, now he?s following Marvin?s all of instructions.?
