National Bookstore Launches Pacquiao Book PhilBoxing.com Sat, 15 Jul 2006 'Pacific Storm, Dispatches on Pacquiao of the Philippines' was formally launched last Thursday at Edsa Shangri-La. The book, written by the Philippine Daily Inquirer's Recah Trinidad, is a compilation of the articles that detail the iconic fighter's rise from abject poverty to the height of the boxing world. A must-read for anyone who follows the fight game and enjoys reading the values of hard work, 'Pacific Storm' is now available at all National Bookstore outlets. Below are excerpts from the book on Page 79: STORM ACROSS THE PACIFIC THE thin watery porridge, eaten only twice a day at most and which serve as a full meal crippling daylong hunger, was no fiction. Neither was the downgrading of the hopeless, unschooled street kid who finally had his revenge and redemption. The rags to riches story of Manny Pacquiao, a once lost, hungry underdog, is as real as real can be. But, as these are fantastic details that form the core of many make-believe movies, Pacquiao has started to be regarded as a superhero. In fact, a movie has already been made of his life story, bringing the boxing celebrity only a few fancy shots away from becoming a fulltime myth. "I'm very sorry," Pacquiao begged one night inside the Makati Coliseum, a little over a month after his victory over Erik Morales. He was calling the shots of a 5-cock derby that he was sponsoring. No, he was not short of cash, never. In fact, he would approve of million-peso dares with a simple nod, a flick of a finger, without batting an eyelash. "I thank the Lord for all these blessings," he continued. "Truth is, I don't even have time for myself and my family. Even that escape to Hong Kong, it was the only time we could be together. I could not accommodate all the people coming to me. God knows how I wish I could. If possible, I would like to help all the poor, sick and needy. I really feel bad I couldn't. In fact, whenever I pray, it's not only for myself. I pray for everybody. I ask that peace and harmony reign in our country." |
