EDGAR SOSA BACK IN CONTENTION FOR WBC TITLE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Apr 2012 ![]() Former WBC light flyweight champion Edgar Sosa is back in contention for the title following a twelve round unanimous decision win over WBC Silver belt holder Wilbert Uicab at the Oasis Resort and Hotel in picturesque Cancun, Mexico on Sunday, Manila Time. The long- reigning champion Sosa overcame Uicab in a sometimes rugged brawl in a fight billed as a title eliminator which would set him up for a title clash with newly crowned champion Sonny Boy Jaro, one of promoter Aljoe Jaroe's top fighters.. Uicab who was the hometown favorite got off to a sensational start when he dropped Sosa in the opening round but Uicab had a point taken away by referee Jay Nady in the fourth round when he threw Sosa to the canvas in what looked like a takedown. Sosa came back strong and decked Uicab in the sixth round to earn the nod of all three judges ? Julie Lederman, Max DeLuca and Jesse Reyes who turned in identical scorecards of 114-111 in favor of Sosa. The 32 year old former world champion improved his record to 45-7 with 27 knockouts while the 28 year old Uicab dropped to 33-7-1 with 18 knockouts. Sosa was coming off a 7th round TKO of Filipino Roilo Golez in a WBC International flyweight title fight last January 7 after losing a twelve round decision in a WBC title fight against Pongsaklek Wonjongkam in Bangkok on October 21, 2011. Pongsaklek was subsequently battered by another Filipino Sonny Boy Jaro who won the title by a 6th round TKO after dropping the Thai veteran once in the 1st and 3rd rounds and twice in the 6th last March 2 in Chonburi, Thailand. Uicab lost by a unanimous twelve round decision to Japan?s Toshiyuki Igarashi in a WBC flyweight title eliminator on November 6, 2011 but had previously won a twelve round unanimous decision over Filipino Edrin Dapudong in a WBC Silver title fight.
