BOXER BON JOVI CANILLAS RECOVERING AFTER BRAIN SURGERY

PhilBoxing.com

Popular Pan Asia Boxing Association super bantamweight champion Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas is recovering following brain surgery for a blood clot suffered after a sparring session at the famed ALA Gym late February.

ALA Promotions president Michael Aldeguer told the Manila Standard that after a sparring session with undefeated newcomer Mark Acob (6-0, 5 KO?s) a strong puncher like Canillas, the 23 year old PABA champion who was about to take a shower told another fighter that he had a headache and was feeling faint. The information was relayed to the trainers in the gym.

Chad Canares, executive assistant to ALA Promotions CEO informed the Standard that the trainers immediately rushed Canillas to the Cebu Doctors Hospital where he underwent a series of tests. He said they also fetched the wife of Canillas and informed his family.

After assessing the situation Dr. Emerito Calderon and Dr. Nito Vergara recommended surgery which the wife of Canillas and his family agreed to.

The operation was deemed successful and Canillas is ?recovering slowly.? However, the accident has effectively ended the promising career of an exciting, aggressive fighter with a record of 17-4 with 14 knockouts.

Canares disclosed that they have already spent over P150,000 for the hospital bills of Canillas which include the costs of surgery and daily medicines plus laboratory tests, CTSCan etc., and that ?there is still an existing running balance of over P300,000 which could still go up.?

Aldeguer pointed to the case of super flyweight Z ?The Dream? Gorres who collapsed in his corner after winning a ten round decision in a title eliminator against Luis Melendez and underwent brain surgery at the Las Vegas Medical Center.

Gorres underwent rehab both in Las Vegas and Cebu and has had what amounts to an amazing recovery after another operation on his throat in Cebu.

Gorres attends all the fights of the ?Pinoy Pride? series and was at the Dusit Thani hotel for the recent 12th Annual ?Flash? Elorde ?Banquet of Champions.?

Canillas won the PABA title with a 9th round TKO over Thailand?s Sukkasem Kietyongyuth on April 22, 2011 but dropped a six round decision in his last fight against Yuta Uetani in Osaka, Japan last October 2.

Canares said they did not want to publicize the unfortunate accident earlier because ALA Promotions ?did not wish to put Canillas? family under undue stress at that moment? but since his family had approached other agencies and individuals for additional assistance, they decided to come out with the story.
