ALICE KATE APARRI HAMMERS HER WAY INTO ASIAN WOMEN?S BOXING CHAMPIONSHIP SEMI FINALS

PhilBoxing.com

AIBA World Championship bronze medalist and three-time Southeast Asian Games gold medalist Alice Kate Aparri hammered her way into the semi finals of the 6th Asian Women?s Boxing Championships where she joined teammate Nesthy Petecio who earlier powered her to a bronze medal at least at the new sport palace in Buyant-Ukhaa in the Mongolian capital of Ulan Bator.

Aparri relied on her vast experience and ring savvy to turn back the challenge of gritty Vietnamese Tuyet Mai Nguyen Thi who was a strong boxer and was named to the Vietnamese squad despite having lost in the Vietnam national championships because of her potential.

ABAP executive director and head of the Philippine delegation Ed Picson conceded that although the judges turned in a lopsided 25-14 tally in favor of Baguio girl it was an action-packed bout and closer than the score indicated.

Picson said Tuyet ?gave as much as she got but Aparri was just too clever, experienced and skilled.?

The Filipina led all the way to secure a semi final berth. The AIBA website described Aparri as ?an experienced boxer who won a bronze medal at the 2001 Asian Women?s Championship and changed weight in an effort to win a berth to the 2012 London Olympic Games. She put on an excellent showing in her opening bout in beating Chinese-Taipei?s Pin Meng Chieh 15-5.?

With the win Aparri goes into the semi finals where she will face India?s five-time AIBA world champion Mary Kom for the fourth time in recent years. Picson noted that ?Alice has yet to beat her but she feels the time has come.?

Petecio is also expected to face an uphill battle against the skilled Chinese boxer Ke Jia Liu. China?s head coach selected Liu from Inner Mongolia since she will be very close to her training venue.

Aparri and Petecio will see action on Saturday buoyed by the encouraging messages they have received from ABAP president Ricky Vargas. The team?s coaching staff is headed by national head coach Pat Gaspi and includes women?s team coaches Mitchel Martinez and Violito Payla.
