Missed Opportunities in the Michael Domingo-Alejandro Montiel Fight By Epifanio M. Almeda PhilBoxing.com Fri, 07 Jul 2006 Alejandro Montiel would have been on the worldwide PPV TV had Rey ?Boom Boom? Baustista been healthy enough to fight at the Araneta Coliseum last Sunday, 2 July 2006 (Philippine time) in the undercard of the Manny Pacquiao-Oscar Larios fight. But I believe Montiel did not miss that ?opportunity? and he might have even been glad it was not shown live. Previously expected to be the main appetizer to the Pacquiao-Larios tussle, the Bautista-Montiel-turned-Domingo-Montiel pairing became the 10th and last of the 10-fight card list. But while being listed as the last of the 6 off live TV fights, Domingo-Montiel became the supporting bout to the Dennis Laurente-Rustam Nugaev ?main-event? of the said off live TV fights. These are those who MISSED opportunities in the Domingo-Montiel fight: Rey ?Boom Boom? Bautista ? had he been able to fight Montiel, he would have upped his stock before the worldwide audience as he surely would have KO?d Montiel sooner than the 7th round ending scored by Domingo. Michael Domingo ? while he was able to capitalize on the golden opportunity he gained by soundly defeating Montiel, he missed that which could have made everyone who frowned on his 28-13 win-loss record notice who the real Michael Domingo is. The Filipinos who watched the fight live ? And who didn?t? Their happiness would?ve been a notch higher had they seen the only KO scored in the Philippines vs. Mexico contest. Domingo dropped Montiel in the first round and beat him up every round thereafter. Montiel never showed any justification to the 51-7 win-loss record he brought to the ring prior to the fight. Domingo won every round and dominantly. Domingo did what Bautista could have done to give more joy to the KO hungry Filipino crowd. Malcolm Tu?acao ? OPBF champion and world rated Tu?acao should have been the substitute for Bautista. ?Ikaw na unta and moaway karon batok ni Montiel? (You should?ve been the one fighting Montiel now), I remarked to Malcolm at the ringside prior to the start of the first fight. ?Ma-o lagi unta. ?nya kay wa man ko ka sparring? (Yes I should?ve been. It?s unfortunate I haven?t been doing some sparring), rued Malcolm as he realized what he missed. We wouldn?t know if the fight would still be included in the live TV coverage had Malcolm fought Montiel instead of Domingo. ABS-CBN? ? while I placed a question mark on this one, I still believe the TV station missed something ? showing a good Filipino showing. Why was the Bautista-Montiel-turned-Domingo-Montiel contest taken off the live TV list? Probably the organizers believed Domingo would lose and it was not appealing to show a fight where a Filipino would lose. Had Bautista fought instead of Domingo, there wouldn?t have been a list of missed opportunities as above made. But we would, in turn, miss noticing a late bloomer in a much improved Michael Domingo.
