Hopkins will lead the panel of neutral judges in one of the biggest World Boxing Council (WBC) championship fight in Asia between super flyweight champion and ESPN?s No. 4 Suriyan Sor Rungvisai (20-4-1, 7 KOs) and Japanese challenger Yota Sato (23-2-1, 12 KOs) on March 27 at Korakuen Hall in Tokyo, Japan. Rey Danseco, Elorde awardee for best Philippine boxing judge last year, will work along with a fellow Asian, Jae Bong Kim of South Korea and American, Marty Sammon as judges while another United States citizen, Jack Reiss took the opportunity as referee, the WBC revealed yesterday. Sammon from Santa Clara and Reiss from Valencia are both under licensed of California State Athletic Commission. A pride of Calauag in Quezon province, Danseco has earned the distinction as the first Filipino and Asian to work in any boxing events in Mexico and Canada, where in May last year in Montreal, he and his two other companion in the panel of neutral officials unanimously decided Hopkins to become the oldest boxer to ever win a world title at 46. Hopkins dominated the majority of the 12 intense rounds on his way to dethrone Quebec ?s Jean Pascal, 28, in a rematch for the WBC light heavyweight title at the Bell Centre. The pride of Philadelphia eclipsed the record set by legend George Foreman, who knocked out compatriot Michael Moorer in the 10th round in a stunning upset to reclaim the heavyweight title in 1994 at the age of 45. Sor Rungvisai, 22 from Thailand , will put his title for the second straight time after winning and defending it both by unanimous decisions respectively from Mexican Tomas Rojas in his home turf and former world champ Nobuo Nashiro ? where Kim worked as one of the judges. The contestants are both ranked in the top 10 of the best super flyweights in the world today, based on Ring Magazine?s ranking where Sor Rungvisai is listed No. 2 while Sato is No. 7. Sammon will do his first assignment in WBC world title bout since working in Humberto Soto?s TKO win in the fourth over Antonio Davis in Tijuana , Mexico in 2009. ![]() |
