PhilBoxing.com

The Football fever that hit the Country last year continues this time with the German Club Manila presenting a unique friendly match series pitting the German Club Cranes against the Muntinlupa Inmates on Jan. 14 at the National Penitentiary field in Muntinlupa City.

The project, to be staged in coordination with Hans Seidel Foundation, the German Embassy in Manila and the Office of the Solicitor General, is aimed to promote Physical fitness among inmates encourage leadership, team-building camaraderie.

Proceeds of the program, according to Fil-German David Abrenilla, President of the Executive Communication, Media relation outfit of German club, will go to the Educational program of the inmates for them to improve their status when they finally re-enter the free society.

?The power of football venue to break barriers and bridges gaps should never be estimated? Abrenilla, whose mother hails from Gerona, Tarlac, said during Friday?s SCOOP sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant ? Padre Faura.? This is something the German Club and its partners understood when they put together this event, which I believe is a first not only in the Philippines, but in the world as well.?

?Football, indeed, is a beautiful game, the most popular game in the entire universe, and it is the reason that we conceptualized the idea in our desire to reach those in prison that we, outside of it, are still as forever will be their friends when they go out of it and lead the good life again,? Abrenilla told his audience during the forum, sponsored by Coca-Cola Export, FILA, TV 5 and UNTV.

The German Cranes is made up of Manila-based players, while the Muntinlupa Inmates is composed of medium security prisoners. Assistant Solicitor General Karl Miranda, Paul Schaefer of Hanns Seidel Foundation, Ralph Timmermann, deputy head of mission of the German Embassy and German Club president Michael Scheile are also part of the organization that made possible the staging of the match. Scheile, for his part, said ?football is most Germans? passion and ?bringing this as a combined approach to Bilibid is supporting a rehabilitation program for inmates under the promotion of the Solicitor?s General Office which is very similar to respective program in Germany.?

The 10 a.m. match will be officiated by Philippine Azkals coach Michael Weiss in another living testament to the strong relations between Germany and the Philippines as he has been at the forefront in pushing his team to greater heights.
