Larios draws inspiration from family, coach PhilBoxing.com Thu, 15 Jun 2006 Back in Mexico, he used to help build houses as a carpenter when he was not yet trading leathers for a living. He admitted at one point, he even didn't have some place to cook. Today, he is ready to travel to a virtual lion's den to carve yet another masterpiece. No doubt, Mexico's Oscar 'Chololo' Larios is going into the biggest and most dangerous fight of his life when he crossed the t's for his July 2 showdown with the fire-breathing Manny 'Pacman' Pacquiao. The Filipino icon is known not only for his reflexes and power, but also for a heart that is just as big as any. Larios, however, is not fazed one bit, and vows that he will not only finish credibly, but dish out the finest performance in his life by upsetting the iconic Pacman. In an interview in Japan by ABS-CBN's Dyan Castillejo, Larios vowed to shame Pacquiao in front of his rabid fans, as he plans to draw strength from his pregnant wife, children and a brotherly coach. Larios, in the interview, said that his wife is three months pregnant, and every time his young kids call him up from Mexico, all the pain in training turn into strength that he will store to unleash on the otherworldly Pacman. For several days now, Larios has been holed up at a gym in Tokyo, sparring against WBC bantam champ Hozumi Hasegawa and world-ranked Toshiaki Nishioka, both southpaws like Pacquiao. Everyday, together with his trainer Edison Reynoso, Larios hits Tokyo's road for a punishing run aimed at preparing him to hang on for 12 rounds with Pacquiao. And daily, he walks from his hotel to catch a train ride to the gym in the afternoon, where more punishing sessions await. If Pacquiao has the genius of Freddie Roach to take care of him on July 2, Larios takes equal pride in his trainer Edison Reynoso, who skipped his own honeymoon just so he could join his ward for the Tokyo trip. "My trainer was married three days before we left for Japan. He is really determined to win with me," Larios told the Spanish-speaking Castillejo. Reynoso, for his part, has nothing but high regard for Roach, whom he considers a great trainer. "But I am ready for that, it's not the trainer that wins bouts, it's the boxer. My boxers had beaten his boxers in the past, so I'm confident we can do it again on July 2," stressed Reynoso. No doubt, Larios has the tools to dish out a major re-alignment of stars on July 2, and with a little bit of luck, will find his career once again cooking. |
