?CANELO? ALVAREZ- KERMIT CINTRON TITLE FIGHT ON AKTV, SUNDAY

PhilBoxing.com

Popular Mexican middleweight champion Saul ?Canelo? Alvarez defends his title at the Plaza de Toros in Mexico City on Sunday, Manila Time against Kermit Cintron n a fight card that will be telecast on AKTV IBC 13 ?Big Time Bakbakan? from 9:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m.

Regarded as the hottest prospect in Mexican boxing and a fighter whose career has been carefully nursed, Alvarez is a huge 8-1 favorite over Cintron although the challenger has fought some of the best in his division.

The 21 year old Alvarez whose newly-formed promotional outfit handles Filipino world title light flyweight prospect Denver Cuello is undefeated with a record of 38-0-1 with 28 knockouts while Cintron, the former WBO and IBF welterweight champion has a record of 33-4-1 with 28 knockouts.

Cintron lost both belts to Antonio Margarito who has been cleared by the New York State Athletic Commission to fight Miguel Cotto in what promises to be a bloody rematch on December 3.

After his loss to Margarito, Cintron salvaged a draw against current No.3 in the Ring Magazine pound for pound list Sergio Martinez but unfortunately when he battled Paul ?The Punisher? Williams on May 8, 2010 Cintron was knocked out of the ring following what was described as a bizarre exchange and f ailed to recover within the allotted five minutes and lost a fourth round technical split decision.

After more than a one year layoff, Cintron returned to the ring and lost a disappointing ten round decision to Carlos Molina but came back to win a ten round decision against Antwone Smith last August 12.

The clash with Alvarez could be the chance Cintron is waiting for following his ordeal against Williams to turn his career around.

Handled if not pampered by Golden Boy Promotions, Alvarez is regarded as a dedicated fighter who avoids distractions and is sharply focused. However, there are those who believe Alvarez has avoided fighters like Martinez, Williams and Julio Cesar Chavez Jr who scored a smashing 5th round stoppage of Peter Manfredo Jr last Sunday.

The word from the camp of Alvarez is that he is ready to take out Cintron early in the fight but such predictions do not always come through as we saw in the recent WBO welterweight title fight when both trainer Freddie Roach who predicted a knockout before the ninth round and strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza said Pacquiao would knock out Juan Manuel Marquez within three rounds were proven wrong with Pacquiao winning a controversial majority decision.

Cintron is likely to hang tough during the early rounds but as the fight wears on the much younger and stronger Alvarez is expected to prevail.
