FIL-AM DONAIRE GROOMED TO FACE WBC CHAMP ARCE
By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Thu, 01 Jun 2006
Filipino-American Glenn Donaire, who holds the NABA and NABO flyweight titles, is being groomed by his handlers to tangle with popular World Boxing Council interim flyweight king Jorge Arce of Mexico in an interesting showdown between two talented small men.
This was revealed yesterday by Donaire's promoter Gary Shaw when asked over at Boxingtalk, where he indicated that he will be meeting up with the boxer's manager Cameron Dunkin in Las Vegas to discuss the possible match-up.
Shaw, one of the most influential promoters in the world, had represented Manny Pacquiao until recently, when terms of their boxer-promoter contract had lapsed. The Filipino icon Pacquiao did not sign up again with Shaw, and has opted to promote himself starting with the July 2 bout with Oscar Larios.
Donaire (16-2-1, 9 KO's), who was born in General Santos City but now lives in California, took the NABA and the vacant NABO flyweight titles in his last fight when he decisioned Cesar Lopez in their 12-round bout in Oklahoma last May 5.
Last year, he lost on a disappointing first-round technical knockout to Z "The Dream" Gorres, but has since racked up three wins since that loss.
Although nothing is etched in stone regarding the Arce fight, Shaw stated that Donaire will be back in action very soon, and was confident he could pull off a deal with the Mexican's camp.
