Filipino Flyweight Rocky ?The Road Warrior? Fuentes Fights for Rankings and Glory

PhilBoxing.com

Not many people know that there are a lot of good Filipino boxers who have earned at least one or two regional or Philippine championships and held them for quite a long time. Included in this long list is a Cebuano named Rocky ?The Road Warrior? Fuentes of the ALA Boxing Gym.

The 25-year-old prospect set to fight in the undercard of Pinoy Pride X started boxing when he was just nine years old. A passionate amateur boxer, he won several national championships before turning professional in 2003.

On his first year as a professional, he achieved an impressive seven-win spree and even earned the Philippines Boxing Federation Minimumweight title on his seventh fight, after flooring Philip Parcon in the third round.

An unfortunate ring incident would happen though after one of his opponents would lose his life after their match, a traumatic incident for any fighter to experience. Back to back setbacks came for Fuentes falling short in title shots, but this warrior knew better than to quit.

It took three years for Fuentes to rightfully earn his second title, the Philippines GAB Flyweight crown. But the title came just right, since that time, The Road Warrior has finally learned the ins and outs of the sweet science?that it is not just about physical factors that make one emerge victorious. Metaphysical factors, especially the will and intellect, play a vital part in mastering the fight sport as well.

The Cebuano boxer evolved to become a durable and battle-hardened fighter ready to face any adversary that comes his way. And he has proven it when he, once again, battled for a regional title in March last year in Japan, challenging then-reigning OPBF Flyweight champion Masafumi Okubo.

Okubo was then in his fourth defense of the said title. Indeed, the victory did not come too easy for Rocky. But his newfound focus and zest for the sport carried the Filipino to victory.

Fuentes won by Majority Decision?a close call, but just enough to prove to himself and his followers that he has indeed matured?and transcended in his boxing career.

With the esteem attached to the OPBF crown came the responsibility of defending it. And despite past setbacks, Fuentes chose not to back down from four challengers and instead chose to become better to emerge victorious against each on
The Road Warrior traveled far to defeat Japanese prospects Shigetaka Ikehara, Yasuto Aritomi, and Hirofumi Mukai. He beat Thai prospect Inthanon Sithchamuang in Cebu City.

Because of his victories, Rocky ?The Road Warrior? Fuentes now holds an outstanding 29 (17 KO) L? 6 D? 2 record and holds the OPBF Flyweight title for a year and a half now. Not only that, these wins boosted his ratings in the four major boxing organizations. He ranks #4 in the WBC, #7 in the WBA, #4 in the IBF and #6 in the WBO.

Fuentes is not contented with high ratings alone. He now takes this most recent fight opportunity seriously to boost his ratings and hopefully take him a step further to a world championship match in 2012.

Rocky Fuentes will again be a feature in ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports Pinoy Pride 10 headlined by Rey ?Boom Boom ?Bautista of the Philippines against Mexican knock-out specialist Miguel Angel Mendoza on December 10, 2011 @ the Hoops Dome in Lapu Lapu City, Philippines.
