Nietes, Sabillo get commendation By Jerome S. Nietes and newly-crowned Oriental Pacific Boxing Federation minimumweight champ Merlito ?Tiger? Sabillo during the Pinoy Pride 9 at the University of St. La Salle. Yesterday, Wednesday, the Sangguniang Panglunsod of Bacolod City has passed a resolution authored by Councilor Ceasar Distrito commending Nietes and Sabillo for the honor they brought to the city. Nietes, who was born in Murcia town, grew up in Brgy. Granada while Sabillo was born in the Municipality of Tobosso but raised in Brgy. Singcang-Airport. On the other hand, the government officials of Murcia led by Mayor Andrew Montelibano, yesterday, also paid tribute to Nietes for his victory over the weekend. The at the University of St. La Salle, as the town?s Sangguniang Bayan adopted unanimously a resolution commending the world champion boxer born in Hda. Jovillanos, Brgy. Cansilayan of the said town. Montelibano, in a letter to Vice Mayor and SB Presiding Officer Gerry Rojas, said that the 29-year-old Nietes ?truly deserves a commendation fitting for a sports hero?. Nietes? parents, Josue and Renilla, and next of kin were also cited as community role models for supporting the discipline of boxing. His triumph, which was witnessed by thousands of Negrenses and boxing enthusiasts, did not only inspire the Murciahanons but all the young Filipinos, who dream of becoming world-caliber athletes themselves, Montelibano added. In just a matter of months, he related, Nietes continued his winning streak. In April 2011, he won, also at St. La Salle, against Mexican Armando Vazquez in the junior flyweight division via first-round knockout. Nietes? quest for excellence in sport, indeed, is worth emulating. His recent victory inspires my administration to continuously pursue its search for potential champion-athletes from the grassroots, especially in the fields of boxing, taekwondo and athletic discipline, which are all Olympic events, the mayor stressed. At the Sanggunian yesterday, SB Member Adrian Olimpo, chairman of the Committee on Sports, delivered a privilege speech heralding the inspiring win of Nietes. Olimpo said SB Resolution 146-2011, entitled ?Resolution Commending Local Boxing Hero and WBO Two-Division Titlist Donnie Nietes for Winning the World Light Flyweight Crown During the Pinoy Pride IX Event Last October 8, 2011 at the University of St. La Salle Coliseum, and For Inspiring Young Filipinos to Pursue their Aspirations of Becoming World-Class Athletes?, is a tribute to the boxer?s no ordinary win in a 12-round bout against Mexican Ramon Garcia Hirales. ?Donnie Nietes? triumph serves as an inspiration to many upcoming boxing talents, not only from Murcia but from all over the country, who are chasing their dreams to become world-class Filipino athletes,? Olimpo said in his resolution. The local sporting hero and his relatives had been a great source of pride as the entire Nietes family embraced the discipline of boxing, thus, serving as role models in the community, the councilor added.
