Controversial referee Cortez to call shots in Nietes-Garcia world title fight in Oct. 8 By Jerome S. Galunan Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 28 Sep 2011 BACOLOD CITY ? ?I?m fair but I?m firm.? This is the famous words from one of the most powerful man on the ring in the present time yet was recently became a controversial personality in boxing history ? after that Floyd Mayweather-Victor Ortiz fight last September 18 in Las Vegas. Joe Cortez, the third man inside the ring in that Mayweather-Ortiz clash, has been assigned to call the shots in this highly anticipated and historical Pinoy Pride 9: WBO World Light Flyweight Championship between defending world champ Ramon Garcia of Mexico and the former WBO Minimumweight Champion Donnie ?Ahas? Nietes of the Philippines on October 8, 2011 University of St. La Salle Coliseum. The veteran Cortez, who has been in many high profile fights abroad, has been tasked by WBO President Paco Valcarcel to be in-charge of this first ever world championship fight in Bacolod City and the first for the last two years in the Philippines. Cortez, who has refereed over 170 world championship fights boasts an impressive resume of big names in the sport like Julio Cesar Chavez who fought Oscar DelaHoya, Evander Holyfield and George Foreman is a shoe in for Boxing?s Hall of Fame when he pulls out the plug on his professional career. He also appeared in the cult boxing movie Rocky with Sylvester Stallone on the lead. Cortez will arrive in Bacolod on October 7 and will be joined by WBO judges Lisa Giampa, Danrex Tapdasan and Carlos Ortiz for the Pinoy Pride 9: WBO World Light Flyweight Championship. Meanwhile, Nietes, who is the Philippines longest reigning active world champion only second to Flash Elorde, will be gunning for his second division world championship against reigning champion Garcia of Mexico. Garcia, however, will not be a push over as he is riding on a momentous knock-out win against Columbian Jesus Gelez just months back and he is confident to outdo his Filipino counterpart in this title showdown.
