A pair of young Filipino lifters gifted the Philippines silver medals in the ongoing 2011 World Junior and Sub-Junior Powerlifting Championships in Moose Jaw, Canada.

Lucas Lorenzo and Reggie Ramirez, both only 18 years of age and first timer in overseas competitions, could have brought home the gold medal in bench press event of their respective divisions had the breaks went their way.

Lorenzo, competing in the 93-kilogram category, had broken the Asian Sub-Junior record by lifting 396-kg. in his second try last Saturday and could have denied American Justin Duran by virtue of having a lighter body weight by making a 418-kg. in his third try.

The American however, raised 435-kg. in his last attempt as Lorenzo settled for a second place finish, a notch higher though than Russian Filipp Perunov, who ended up five pounds behind the Filipino. Ramirez, vying in the 53-kg. class, on the other hand, came from a fourth place standing in his first round of competition Aug. 30 and was believed to be on the way to surprise his must bigger and heftier opponents but lost steam in the final round.

His 226-kg. lift, also in bench press, in the final try was 19 kilograms short of Roman Saifuttinov?s 275-kg effort, but edged Samat Assanov of Kazakhstan for the silver medal. Both Lorenzo and Ramirez take pride though in succeeding in their bid for decent finishes which they promised to do when they departed to Canada to carry the country?s flag in the championships.

?I am happy because I maintained my standing and and finally secured the silver medal. May chance pa sana na mag-gold pero di nagtuloly ang suerte,? Lorfenzo said of his accomplishment. ?
??Ayaw ko talaga umuwi ng walang medalya para sa Pilipinas,? Ramirez exclaimed. ?Kaya napakasaya ko. It?s something that cannot be taken away from Clark Cruz, the youngest in the tiny Philippines? four-man delegation, wound up fourth in the deadlift event of the 74-kilkogram division and was denied of a medal finish because of a controversial referee?s decision.

Still to see action is Raymund Debuque who will be strutting his ware in the 120-kg level in the meet ending Sept. 4.
