Boxing Results, Davao City Aug. 27: Unknown Cotabato Boxer Upsets Highly Rated Yap PhilBoxing.com Sun, 28 Aug 2011 Davao City - Unknown North Cotabato boxer Ronnie Apilado shocked highly-rated junior featherweight Marjohn Yap of Cebu City scoring a unanimous decision win in eight rounds of a very exciting fight which was part of a post-Kadayawan boxing show staged by ALA Boxing Promotions in Davao City Saturday night. Yap, who came into the ring expecting an easy tune up fight against the 21-year-old fighter from Midsayap, North Cotabato, abandoned his usual fighting style and decided to backpedal as the bullstrong Apilado pursued him all over the ring connecting with tremendous body and head blows and scoring two clear knockdowns which were ruled a slip of referee Felizardo Resma. Apilado, a Sunday class high school student who only had one 10-round fight prior to his engagement with Yap, was coming from three straight wins since his comeback to the ring following a defeat two years ago and a conflict in his class schedule. His last win was a one round knockout of veteran John Rae Verano with one solid punch to the midsection in a 10-round fight Aug. 13 in Magpet town, North Cotabato. Nicknamed "Baby-faced Destroyer," he now has a record of 14 wins with 10 KOs as against a solitary loss. In the other bouts of the card supported by Summit Water and Cobra Energy drink and the City Government of Davao, rated Ricky Sismundo scored a unanimous decision victory over former world challenger Balweg Bangoyan in 10 rounds of a lightweight encounter. In another exciting 10 round fight, young Ernie Sanchez of Gen. Santos City scored a stunning knockdown with an uppercut in the 3rd round but lost wind towards the end losing to the determined Joseph Von Minoza by split decision in a junior lightweight bout. Another North Cotabato fighter, 18-year-old Joemer Lumacad scored his 5 professional win against one loss by outpointing Andilo Adajar in a flyweight encounter; Arjan Canillas won over Rey Lorico by technical knockout in the 3rd of a 4-round junior lightweight matchup while miniflyweights Bonjon Loperez and Rodante Suacasa fought to a majority draw. The boxing event is a monthly roadshow staged by ALA Boxing Promotions to discover young boxing talents. ![]() |
