5th District slugfest opens in Himamaylan By Jerome S. Galunan Jr. PhilBoxing.com Fri, 19 Aug 2011 ![]() HIMAMAYLAN CITY ? Around fifty young pugs from six local government units (LGUs) are up for the 5th District Inter-LGU Amateur Boxing Tournament which opened yesterday and will run until today at the Cong. Agustin M. Gatuslao Memorial Center here. These LGUs are the municipalities of Hinigaran, Moises Padilla, Isabela, La Castellana and Binalbagan, and the host-Himamaylan City. During the rites witnessed by hundreds of spectators from the 5th District, Negros Amateur Boxing Association (NABA) vice president for South Negros Oscar ?Dodong? Bascon said that he was very thankful that Himamaylan City hosted this boxing tournament. Bascon is also the father of Himamaylan City mayor Agustin ?Tinto?? Bascon and spouse of city vice-mayor Carmencita Bascon. ?This is a great opportunity for our young boxers to uplift their families from poverty. Set for example, our very own Ian Clark Bautista, who recently won a silver medal in Indonesia, is now with the national team. I hope through boxing, we may able to help more young aspirants attain their dreams as well as help their families,? Bascon stressed. He, likewise, hoped that through locally spearheaded boxing tournament, the city will able discover another Manny Pacquiao, Nonito Donaire Jr. and Donnie Nietes. On the other hand, Executive Assistant IV and Provincial Sports Coordinator Angel ?Nonong? Verdeflor, who was the guest of honor during the opening, expressed gratitude for the support shown by the people of the 5th District to the programs of Gov. Alfredo Mara?on. ?Part of the priority agenda of Gov. Mara?on is sports program. And to achieve this goal, the governor wants to eliminate politics in sports,? Verdeflor said. ?Also, we have to give our athletes more exposures in order for them to be highly competitive and more experienced,? he added. The provincial sports official further encouraged the people in the 5th District to continue support the boxing event of the province. ?We promise that we will have this kind of event every year,? Verdeflor said. Meanwhile, Mayor Bascon told the participating boxers to strive hard to win. ?The coins had always two sides, winning and losing. But the important thing is how we remain humble as victors and how we accept defeat,? the official said. This inter-LGU slugfest will also serve as the section of the boxers to compose the 5th District team in the upcoming 2nd Governor?s Cup Boxing Championships tentatively in the second week of October. Supervising the event are the officials from the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines led by Bert and Louie Alison, Nonoy Quiatchon and Guillermo Ratiban Jr. Photo: NABA vice president for South Negros Oscar ?Dodong?
