Phil. Billiards Team target SEA Games Golds PhilBoxing.com Sat, 06 Aug 2011 Fifteen cue artists capable of winning all the four gold medals at stake in the pool events will carry the country?s colors in the sport of billiards and snooker in the coming 26th Southeast Asian Games in Indonesia this November. Former world champions Francisco ?Django? Bustamante and Rubilen Amit will lead the team?s campaign on pool table where the Philippines brought home all the three gold medals disputed two years ago in Laos, according to Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines secretary general Robert Mananquil inFriday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session. Amit, now 30, will be defending her 8-Ball and 9-ball titles she won in 2009, while Bustamante will take the cudgels in the men?s campaign in 9-Ball in the absence of Ronnie Alcano, himself, an ex-world titleholder, who will not be seeing action in this year?s edition of the biennial conclave, Mananquil announced in the session, sponsored by Coca Coila Export, FILA, TV-5 and UNTv. Teaming up with Amit in both the 8-Ball and 9-ball competitions is Iris Ranola, who will be trying to escape from the shadow of her more illustrious teammate. Unheralded Jundel Mazon will be playing alongside Bustamante in the men?s 9-Ball discipline after topping the field, that included legendary Efren ?Bata? Reyes, in the four-month elimination conducted by the Billiards and Snooker Congress of the Philippines from April until July. Veteran internationalists pair of Warren Kiamco and Jeffrey de Luna will be the country?s bets in the 8-Ball play. ?Malakas ang pool men?s and women?s teams natin compare to three other events the country is participating,? Mananquil said in reference to the Sanooker, English billiards and carom events ? disciplines where the Filipino cue artists participation will defend on the availability of funding. ?We recommended 15 players as to make up the national team, but whether the English Billiards, snooker and the Carom teams will be approved by the POC (Philippine Olympic Committee) still hangs in the air,? Mananquil said. ?Sabi kasi nila yun lang daw may medal potential ang dapat makasama.? ?Our chances kasi in both events are not that strong as in the pool events, kaya baka hindi approbahan ng POC. But just the same, we recommended the players who made it into the teams just the same because we owe it to our athletes that they be included in the team after surviving the long, tedious qualifying tournaments we held,? he reasoned out. Reyes, along with Francisco dela Cruz and Rey Grandea will be the country?s entries in carom, while Felipe Tauro and Luis Saberdo will see action in English billiards. Making up the snooker squad are Rodolfo Loradn, Michael Mengorio and Alvin Barbero. ?Our teams in snooker, carom and English billiards might not be as strong as the team in the pool event, but this doesn?t mean we don?t have any chances in those events. We have with Bata there to power the carom team,? Managuil assured. Amit, Ranola, Tauro, Barbero and assistant coach Ireneo Gutierrez accompanied Mananquil to the public service forum and all expressed excitement in carrying the country?s colors in Indonesia. ![]() |
