TAIWAN?S SENSATIONAL KO PIN YI ROUTS SHANE VAN BOENING TO WIN 2011 GUINNESS WORLD SERIES OF POOL CHAMPIONSHIP PhilBoxing.com Mon, 18 Jul 2011 ![]() Taiwan?s sensational youngster Ko Pin Yi played a near flawless game of pool to rout 2007 US Open 9-Ball Champion ?The South Dakota Kid? Shane Van Boening, to win the 2011 Guinness World Series of Pool championships 10-4 and pocket the top prize of US$41,000 at the Mal Taman Anggrek in Jakarta on Sunday. Taiwan?s position as a powerhouse pool contender alongside the Philippines was first established in the semi finals when Ko played some immaculate shots to score a stunning 8-6 upset of the tournament?s top seed and World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo to serve notice that he was ready to take on Van Boening who had earlier whipped hometown favorite and last year?s runner up Irsal Nasution 8-4. Van Boening started strong to take a 2-0 lead but Ko bounced back immediately with a break and run out in the 4th rack and was able to capitalize on a foul on the 1ball attempt by Van Boening in the 5th to tie the score at 2 racks each. Ko was just starting to heat up and beginning with the 5th frame the young Taiwanese sensation turned the contest into a lopsided affair breaking and running out three straight times while at the same time taking advantage of two back-to-back t dry-breaks by Van Boening to completely dominate and go ahead 6 ? 2. Van Boening got a welcome reprieve in the 9th as Ko missed on an attempt to cut the 1ball into the corner pocket allowing the American to turn the error into a rack conversion to stop the bleeding 3 ? 6. At this point however, things were looking bleak for the South Dakota Kid as his game unraveled. Sensing the championship was within his grasp Ko, never looked back and turned Van Boening into a mere spectator with his immaculate breaking and supreme counter safeties. Ko allowed Van Boening to win just one more rack before cruising all the way to the championship 10 ? 4. For his runner-up finish Van Boening earned s US$11,000.00. An ecstatic Ko said ?I prepared really hard for this tournament. Through all that training, I think that helped me keep my emotions in check whenever I felt pressure in my matches. And that proved to be the difference in my game this year. I?m very excited to tell my friends and my parents back home about my win.? In the semi finals against Orcollo, Ko raced to a 3 ? 0 lead highlighted by two break and run outs in the 1st and 3rd racks. A missed 2 ? 3 corner pocket effort from Ko in the 4th allowed the world no. 1 to fire off a successful 3 ? 9 combo to open up the table and enter the fray 1 ? 3. In the next frame, a brilliant safety from Orcollo by hiding the cue behind the brown 7 while protecting the object 2ball saw the Pinoy cue-maestro poised to notch one more rack. However an aggressive Ko refusing to give table possession, was able to orchestrate a magical two rail kick for the 2 ? 8 combo to steal the thunder once again from his Filipino rival for an overwhelming 4 ? 1 advantage. Gritting his teeth, Orcollo clawed back into contention with break and run-outs in the 6th and 8th and a routine clean up job off an exposed safety from Ko in the 7th to even things up at 4 racks-a-piece. That turned out to be as close as Orcollo could get as it was clearly the Taiwanese? youngsters day with his textbook form leading him through to an 8 ? 6 result and a hard-earned seat in the finals. Asked about how he felt about beating the world?s No. 1, Ko remarked: ?I just kept cool and kept believing I had a chance. I am very fortunate that luck has been on my side the whole week and I am extremely happy with my game right now. I hope to continue my good fortune all the way towards the championship and make my country proud!? ![]() |
