GORRES VIES FOR 'SPECIAL' OPBF CROWN By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 08 Feb 2006 Top-ranked Oriental and Pacific Boxing Federation (OPBF) superfly Z "The Dream" Gorres will headline a slambang March 18 card in Mandaue City as he takes on Thai Waenpetch Chuwatana in a 12-round war for the vacant OPBF 115-lb title. The card, which was officially launched yesterday by promoter Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani and Gorres' manager Antonio L. Aldeguer during a prescon at an upscale restaurant, will be dubbed "A Dream Comes True," as it has been ALA Boy Gorres' long-time wish to win an OPBF title for the ALA Gym. "This is going to be a very special fight for me," said Gorres, in an interview, referring to the fact that this will be the first time that his handlers will be promoting an OPBF event. The talented southpaw vowed not to disappoint, as he aims to become the first OPBF champ under the umbrella of the ALA group. The 23-year-old Gorres (22-1-1, 12 KO's) will risk his reputation against the former OPBF champ Chuwatana (23-7-2, 14 KO's), who is ten years his senior. Gorres was joined at yesterday's prescon by WBO Asia-Pacific super-featherweight king Czar Amonsot, who is fighting in the undercard on March 18 against a foreign foe. Both Gorres and Amonsot had just stepped out of the PAL flight from Las Vegas which took almost 15 hours, but the duo still found time to engage mediamen in an animated conversation regarding their Las Vegas stints. Promoter Sammy "Don King" Gello-ani announced that Guilty Boxing top honcho Nick Rattena had already sat down with him and business agent Tony Martin, regarding their possible return appearance at the Orleans Hotel and Casino where both fighters showed class and talent in beating their respective foes in front of rowdy fans made up of partisan Filipino and Mexican followers. Gello-ani also took time to thank the Philippine Bisaya Association in Nevada, who helped tremendously in making the event last February 3 at the Orleans a huge hit, prompting hotel executives to ask Gello-ani to bring back the boys sometime after their March bouts. The rest of the March 18 card pits Rocky Fuentes versus Jojo Bardon for the vacant RP flyweight title; Donnie Nietes against Armand De la Cruz; Robert Allanic versus Robert Rubillar; and Alex John Banal against a Thai foe from the Chuwatana group.
