It will be a glittering event as boxing champions and star athletes from different sports are lined up for honors at the third Pacquiao/Elorde Awards Night in Okada Manila tomorrow. Manny Pacquiao and the Elorde family will be on hand to lead the celebration with Sen. Francis Tolentino as guest of honor/speaker and PSC chairman Patrick Gregorio receiving the Distinguished Ring Award. A seven-fight, 50-round “Blow By Blow” bill headlined by the inaugural PBO (Philippine Boxing Organization) championship bout pitting Giemel Magramo against Marco John Rementizo for the vacant superflyweight crown will kick off the affair at 2pm. Pacquiao initiated the formation of PBO and as chairman, will reach out to various world boxing bodies to include PBO champions in their ratings. PBO president Mig Elorde said Pacquiao plans to upgrade purses for title bouts and present world-class belts to every champion. “No conflict with GAB and PBF,” noted Elorde. “With more champions, it’s better for Filipino boxers na makilala sa buong mundo at magkaroon ng magandang ratings.” IBF minimumweight champion Pedro Taduran and WBC minimumweight king Melvin Jerusalem will be cited as Co-Boxers of the Year. The Ring Excellence Award will be given to “Thrilla In Manila” referee Carlos Padilla, represented by his daughter Zsa Zsa. Also to be awarded are Manager of the Year JC Manangquil, Referee of the Year Jerold Tomeldan, Judge of the Year Gil Co, Trainers of the Year Michael Domingo and Carl Penalosa, Promising Boxer of the Year Joseph Sumabong, Fight of the Year featuring Eumir Marcial versus Eddy Colmenares and SEA Games boxing medalists. From different sports, awards will be given to tennis star Alex Eala, ONE strawweight world champion Joshua Pacio and Bare Knuckle world superwelterweight champion Rolando Dy, son of former WBC superfeatherweight ruler Rolando Navarrete. Posthumous recognition will be accorded referee/judge Bruce McTavish, sportswriter Eddie Alinea and trainer Jonathan Penalosa. Pacquiao will deliver an inspirational message, GAB chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera the opening remarks and Liza Vicencio Elorde the opening address. Former world boxing champions are expected to attend.
