Roach, Ariza plan Pacman's Training

PhilBoxing.com

Shaking off the rust brought about by almost four months of inactivity will be reigning World Boxing Organization welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao?s concern today as he starts his three-week training in Baguio City for his coming title-fight with Sugar Shane Mosely in May.

Pacquiao and his team, headed by chief trainer Freddie Roach and strength and conditioning coach Alex Ariza, drove to the country?s summer capital yesterday where the Filipino eight-division belt-owner will have a taste of what it is atop the ring since reducing Mexican Antonio Margarito to a pulp in November of last year in Dallas, Texas.

?The first day, or the first week for that matter, will be strictly on physical conditioning, ? Roach revealed in an interview Saturday night with this reporter at the Sofitel Hotel where he had stayed since arriving Tuesday last week. . ?It will be all Alex?s (Ariza) show. Manny will be working with Alex 90 percent of the week.?

?Manny will be doing light shadow boxing and then he works the mitts with me for several round to give him a taste of the ring that kept him starved for four to five months (since his demolition of Margarito),? Roach, who admitted not seeing Pacquiao since setting his foot in Manila.

His job as a congressman representing his wife Jinkee?s province Sarangani Pacquiao had kept Pacquiao busy whole of last week disrupting the conditioning regimen he started in General Santos City since arriving from a four-city U.S. Tour to hype his confrontation with over-sized Mosley May 7 in Las Vegas.

Pacquiao, in fact, only arrived in Manila yesterday morning from General Santos where he stayed with his family over the weekend.

?Noon ko na lang makakasama ang pamilya ko bago sumubo sa isa na naming mahaba at mahirap na paghahanda sa laban ko kay Mosley, kaya sinamantala ko na,? Pacquiao said.

Ariza, who arrived in Manila with Roach, for his part, agreed with his boss that building up the stamina lost due to the long layoff since he last saw action, will be the main dish of the condition program he prepared for the week.

?It will be roadwork in the morning and in the afternoon, I will be checking his body capacity, muscles, etc. About an hour session, Ariza said adding he has brought with him food supplement to help in recovering Manny?s strength.

While the coming week will be concentrated on recovering lost ground, the following week start the more tedious sparring initially against two up-and-coming fighters who will be arriving this weekend ? lighweigfht David Rodela and undefeated welterweight Shawn Porter, the same mate who helped Manny in his fight against Joshua Clottey early last year.

?We will be doing everything we had done before in his previous fight in the coming week. Except sparring, which will come later.

As to reports that preparations might have already been delayed because Mosley has already begun his at least two weeks earlier, both Roach and Ariza refused to agree.

?I know Manny. I know that when he starts training he will give his 100 percent attention to it. Of course, like last year, there will be a lot of disturbances owing to his job as a congressman, but we will try to minimize that. He?s proven himself to be a pro in the past decade that we?ve been together and that won?t change,? he observed.

?For a boxer of Manny?s status, there is no such thing as a short training period. In fact, knowing him, the shorter the preparations are, the better for him. This is because, for many times, he has shown his capability to catch up,? Ariza noted.
