WBO Oriental Champs Villanueva, Asenjo Fight in Gensan Saturday PhilBoxing.com Fri, 25 Feb 2011 ![]() Rommel Asenjo. General Santos City - Undefeated featherweight Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva and miniflyweight Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, both Oriental champions of the World Boxing Organization (WBO) display their wares in separate tune up bouts scheduled tomorrow, Feb. 26, here in Gen. Santos City. Villanueva, 24, (18 wins, 17 KOs) takes on journeyman Ruben Sentillanosa in 10 rounds while Asenjo, 21, (19 wins, 16 KOs, 2 losses) battles Jongjong Ponteras in 8 rounds. Both bouts are part of the two Oriental champion's preparation for their title defense two months from now. Villanueva, an awkward fighter who packs a tremendous punch and known for his courage inside the ring, was earlier expected to defend his title against former world title challenger Billy Dib of Australia. The fight did not push through when the Australian promoter denied the request of Villanueva's promoter, ALA Boxing Promotions, and his manager, former North Cotabato governor Manny Pinol, for a neutral referee and one Filipino judge. Dib, a known dirty fighter, has allegedly been aided in many of his previous bouts in Australia by local ring officials. Dennis Canete, vice president of ALA Boxing, said the promotions company headed by the young Michael Aldeguer is currently working on Villanueva's title defense of his Oriental belt while Asenjo is being lined up for another title defense or possibly a crack at the world title. Villanueva has already defended his title twice, a 2nd round technical knockout of Eric Macas and a 6th round submission of former WBC International jr. featherweight champion Balweg Bangoyan. Both Villanueva and Asenjo belong to the Braveheart Boxing Club of North Cotabato owned by the Pinol brothers and are promoted by ALA Boxing of Cebu City. Another Braveheart boxer who will see action in Gen. Santos City tomorrow will be undefeated Rey Juntilla who will go up against another undefeated fighter, Ernie Sanchez, in 6 rounds in the junior featherweight division. ![]() |
