The Young Tri-Athlete
By Robbie Pangilinan PhilBoxing.com Wed, 26 Jan 2011

SINGAPORE - He swam, he biked, he ran. And he bested them all. Gabrielle Allen Santiago, 14 years old, bagged the first place in the mini-duathlon boys category during the Singapore Duathlon 2011 held at the East Coast Park last Sunday.
Young triathletes aged 13 to 15 competed in the prestigious event for the world?s toughest endurance sport. But Santiago, a junior high school student at Colegio De San Juan De Letran, emerged as the champion.
Santiago has won numerous triathlon competitions since joining the sport in 2008. Last year, he brought home 22 local awards including first place in the Subic National Age Group Triathlon, the Alaska Ironkids Aquathlon (Alabang and Camarines Sur), Philippine Premiere Cycling League Round 5, NAGT 5th Leg 2010, Ironkids 6th Leg and Philippine Cycling Premiere 4th League. He was also hailed champion in the Fiesta Sampaguita Sprint Triathlon, the 12th Pagsanjan Sprint Triathlon, the Ateneo Aquathlon 2010, the Philippine Premier Cycling League 1st and 2nd Legs, the Urban Duathlon 2010 and the Ironkids Aquathlon 2010.
Santiago joined and finished first in the Tour of Hamilo Coast where he swam, cycled and ran in Matabungkay, Tuy, Balayan, Nasugbu and Calatagan for two days. He also has second and third place wins in 2010. He finished second in the 1st Ironkids Run Race and the Animo Sprint Triathlon; and third in the Fiesta Sampaguita Sprint Triathlon, the 2nd Ironkids Run Race, the Triathlon Asian Championship 2010 and the Philippine Cycling Premiere 4th League.
The teen athlete?s laurels in 2009 and 2008 are just as numerous as last year?s, with nine first place wins, six second place, three fourth place, and a 9th place. His other international award was 7th place in the World Kids Yokohama Triathlon in Japan.
Santiago is an inspiration for his fellow triathletes, a good role model for young Filipinos, and a pride of the country. #
