FIL-AM MEDICAL MISSION IN CALIFORNIA GOES TO SARANGANI JAN 15 By Emmanuel Rivera, RRT PhilBoxing.com Mon, 10 Jan 2011 "It is an honor helping the poor and the sick (Malaking karangalan ang makatulong sa kapwa mahirap at nang may sakit). We'd like to thank the Philippine Medical Society of Northern California, volunteer doctors, nurses, hospital professionals for the time, services and, above all, the compassion we share for our fellow Filipinos in need. We appreciate your noble mission of healthcare for our great country. We look forward to working with you and future medical volunteers here in our Sarangani province," - Congressman Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao What: Philippine Medical Society of Northern California 26th Annual Medical-Surgical Mission When: January 15-21, 2011 Where: Sarangani, Philippines Objectives: Free surgical, medical and dental services Medical Operations: Predominantly thyroidectomies, cleft lip and palate repairs, cataract surgeries (provisions for free cataract lenses) and abdominal operations. Anticipated population to be served: 10,000 (annual average for the last 15 years) "The Philippine Medical Society of Northern California would like to support Sarangani province's healthcare initiatives including Congressman Emmanuel "Manny" Pacquiao's plan to build a hospital. Manny's civic-mindedness encouraged many volunteers to give back and share their blessings to our less fortunate countrymen. From the USA, there are about 150 volunteers--composed of doctors, nurses, dentists, allied healthcare professionals, medical students and technical/biomedical support groups. We pay our own way and lodging. We provide free medications and supplies," Dr. Herman Valle, head of medical mission, explained. "So far, the PMSNC has been the largest group of volunteers providing much needed services in the Philippines. Yearly, the board chooses different locations based on the request of local civic leaders for that community. Sarangani province was requested through the vice-governor's office," Dr. Emmanuel Cepe of the Washington Township Medical Group (Fremont) acknowledged. ? "We are looking forward to sharing our mission of health and hope with the people of Sarangani and to help Manny Pacquiao's vision to help the poor and the sick," Dr. Reynaldo Cordero and PMSNC board representatives concluded. Author's Notes: "Driven by the motivation to help those in need and by the spirit of "giving back a little of the blessings we have received. The mission volunteers pay little attention to the expenditure of personal time and resources as well as time away from jobs and family. They forego the comfort of home, often living and working under spartan conditions and limited facilities. When the job is done, they go home exhausted but happy in the thought of having helped people in need whom they never saw before and will probably never see again They ask for no monetary recompense, but they leave enriched with warmth of new friendship and the love of a grateful community." "The PMSNC has been doing community outreach programs with emphasis on diabetes, tuberculosis, hepatitis, domestic violence, depression among the elderly, teenage suicide, and cardiovascular diseases. These diseases have been prevalent among the Filipinos and other Asian minorities." (excerpts from PMSNC.com) http://pmsnc.com/tmp/Medical_Mission.html PMSNC acknowlegements go to Sarangani Gov. Miguel "Migs" Dominguez, Vice-Governor Steve Chiongbian Solon and their staff for facilitating the upcoming mission. Special thanks to Dr. Herman Valle, Dr. Emmanuel Cepe, Jessy "Boyet" Madayag and the PMSNC staff for their contributions to this article.
