PONCE DE LEON HELPING BARRERA TO DEFEAT 'BOOM BOOM' BAUTISTA!
PhilBoxing.com Thu, 23 Dec 2010
Former WBO superbantam king Daniel Ponce De Leon is reportedly helping compatriot Alejandro Barrera prepare for his grudge rematch with Filipino fighter Rey "Boom Boom" Bautista.
Ponce de Leon gained notoriety among Filipino fight fans after he easily demolished Bautista in the main event of the "World Cup of Boxing" back in 2007 in Sacramento, California.
According to sources, Ponce de Leon had sparred with Barrera in preparation for the grudge rematch, and helped devise a strategy to defeat the ALA fighter.
The much-anticipated rematch takes place in the main event of the "Pinoy Pride 3" event on January 29 at the Waterfront Cebu City Hotel.
Barrera is currently training in Mexico City, Mexico under the watchful guidance of trainer Victor Hugo Correa.
"Hugo Correa and Daniel Ponce de Leon are compadres, they were teammates in the Mexican Olympic team back in 2000," said a source.
"They said they have devised a plan on how to KO Boom Boom," the source added, noting how Daniel Ponce de Leon KO'd Bautista in the World Cup main event.
The ALA fighter, however, continues to train under trainer Edmund Villamor at the famed ALA Gym in Cebu.
Presented by ALA Promotions and ABS-CBN Sports, "Pinoy Pride 3" will also showcase Edrin Dapudong of Braveheart Stable and Jason Pagara going up against foreign foes.
Also seeing action is newly-crowned PABA bantamweight champion Rolly Gasca in a non-title tiff.
