Laput outfoxes Canillas and other undercard stories

PhilBoxing.com

This was just an eight rounder but sportswriters who have closely followed the fight game here in Cebu wanted to see this match-up. A young up and coming power puncher against a former world ranked boxer who was one loss away from being forgotten.

Larry ?Bon Jovi? Canillas knocked out his last seven opponents who have lasted an average of two rounds. Ramie Laput ,a former WBO intercontinental superbantamweight and former interim WBO Asia-Pacific titlist was knocked out in his last fight in Austria against Zsolt Bedak last December. He never got a chance to fight again.

After ten months, he finally got a chance to make a statement and he grabbed it. Canillas pressed but Laput moved, side stepped and picked his spots. The 21 year old Canillas was a picture of frustration as early as the 3rd round. He tried to force to issue but made a grave mistake of going in without a jab. Laput repeatedly nailed him with a left, either as a counter or a well placed jab; he would then diffuse Canillas with smart clinches.

Laput was also spot on with his combos. Canillas tried to go for a knockout but could never catch the wily veteran.

The scorecards read 78-74, 77-75 and 78-75. Canillas drops to 15W-3L, 13 KO?s while Laput improves to 39W-4L, 17 KO?s.

Canillas? power will always be there. This is a good learning experience that he can always look back on. We know he had no good amateur background before turning pro.

This may have been just an eight round contest, but with this victory, the 31 year old Laput reminded the local promoters that he was still around and far from being a spent force. He also reminded us as to why this sport is called boxing.

Melligen and Pagara score KO wins

It was not exactly a surprise that Top Rank fighter Mark Jason Melligen pummeled Bladimir Hernandez. The Mexican?s knockout prowess was nowhere to be found. Hernandez? face already had a reddish hue in the opening round courtesy of Melligen?s right jabs and left straight.

In the third, Hernandez was brought to his knees by a body shot and was sent down again near his corner prompting the referee to stop the fight at the 2:57 mark.

Jason Pagara stopped a passive Sapapetch Sor Sakaraot in the second round. The Filipino teenager dropped the Thai thrice in the round. Sapapetch was obviously in no condition to take body shots. Official time ? 2:24.

Pagara has received an invite to train in the U.S. We look forward to watching him fight a top ten lightweight. Melligen should face a name contender when he returns to Vegas.

Jun ?Flash? Entor always pleases the fans who double up with laughter watching his antics. He also won against Romano Gelig by third round TKO, with a series of unanswered punches. Official time 2:46.

Welbeth Loberanis worked behind a crisp jab and well timed counters to outpoint Joel Lagusan in 6 rounds. Scores ? 59-55,59-55 and 60-54.

Ryan Canillas and Renjie Sabanal battled to a split draw after 4 rounds. Scores ? 39-37 Canillas, 39-37 Lagusan and 38-38. Rey Melligen scored a first round TKO win over a hapless Evelino Balleser. Official time: 1:05.
