Asiad Soft Tennis Team Updates at SCOOP

PhilBoxing.com

A sweep of both the men?s and women?s team events in the recent Fourth Southeast Asian Soft Tennis Federation Championships has virtually assured the Filipino racket-wielders a place in the medal standing in the coming Asian Games this November in Guangzhou, China.

But whether the five gold medals the Nationals scooped up in the open competitions in the series held Sept. 17-19 in Kota Kinabalu in Malaysia can be translated into the same color in Guangzhou will depend on the preparations the team will undertake from now up to the start of the Asian on Nov. 12.

Soft tennis association president, Col. Jeff Tamayo yesterday said the gold medals won in the men?s and women?s team events are already good for the bronze medals in Asiad although it will take a lot of doing in the athletes? training and support from all concerned for his wards to remain in the hunt for a third place finish.
?Soft tennis, unlike tennis is a sport for Asians. Meaning the fact that our athletes have already been lording it over our Southeast Asian neighbors means we?re already in third spot in the Asian level,? Tamayo disclosed durin yesterday?s SCOOP Sa Kamayan weekly session at the Kamayan Restaurant-Padre Faura.
?All we have to do know is to make our athletes improve on their present skills to at least approximate the Japanese and the Koreans, who are still superior in the sport in the men?s and women?s respectively,? Tamayo said during the forum, sponsored by Smart Sports, FILA and Mang Inasal.

?What I can only say is almost assured na ang isang bronze medal wither from the men?;s or women?s team competition. Pipilitin na lang natin na ma-improve sa silver or mas maganda gold,? Tamayo, who also headed the national delegation in its successful campaign in the Asean Tribal Games where the Filipino natives hauled three gold medals narrated.
Both sporting conclave would not have been possible, he said, without the help of the Philippine Sports Commission.
The Filipino women?s soft tennisters actually sweep the singles and doubles events with Bien Zoleta leading a 1-2 Philippine finishes in the singles play, beating countryman Cheryl Macasera to the gold.

Macasera, however, teamed up with Deena Rose Cruz in capturing top honors in the doubles event over compatriots Jsephine Paguyo and playing-coach Divina Gracia Escala. Rounding up the Filipinos? gold-medal rampage was Joseph Arcilla?s dominating the men?s singles at the expense of Prihatin of Indonesia.
The only gold medals that escaped the Filipinos hands were those in the men?s doubles won by an Indonesian tandem and the mixed doubles ruled by a Thai team.

The Filipinos were also tops in the junior division wth a harvest of nine gold medals Chynna Mamawal led the assault by taking top honors in the Under-21 girls play, Joana Jean Carnay in the U-18 girls, Noreen Subol in the U-15 girls, and Brian Carl Viray in the U-15 boys.

Othe Filipino winners are Davis Alano and Gerome Patrombon in the U-21 boys doubles; Glaze Ann Gonzales and Chynna Mamawal in the U-21 girls doubles; Jeremiah Macias and Viray in the U-18 boys doubles; Kezyl Ann Macias and Carnay in the U-18 girls doubles.

ASEAN TRIBAL GAMES

June Abiong, an Aeta from the mountains of Zambales, meanwhile, topped the tree top archery and the Tribal blow pipe events at the forefront of the Filipinos? gold medal winning in the Asean Tribal Games held also in Malaysia.

Abiong also completed a RP 1-2 finishes in the archery assault course ending up second to teammate Dumiao Naval, another Aeta native.
