ABAP BOXERS WIN FOUR WEIGHT DIVISION TITLES AT MAYWOOD, CALIFORNIA

PhilBoxing.com

Maywood, CA: - For all intents and purposes, the members of Team Boksing Pilipinas from the Amateur Boxing Association of the Philippines (ABAP) did very well at the Maywood Boxing Tournament held in this City southeast of downtown Los Angeles this weekend.

Six of the 11 members competed in their respective weight class and 4 won the championship in their weight class. One bout was ironic however. Two members of the Team had to fight for their weight class title as no one was left to fight them.

Josie Gabuco ( Philippines) beat Paula Arana (Duarte, CA) and won the Women?s 106 lbs. Division.

Charley Suarez (Philippines) stopped Christian Leon (Los Angeles) and won the 132 lbs. Division. The referee upon advise of the ringside doctor stopped the fight on round three after Suarez hurt Leon with clean combinations.

Delfin Boholst (Philippines) won a hard fought fight over Jaime Ocegueda (Commerce, CA) and won the 141 lbs. Division. The fight was very close with Boholst receiving an 8-count in the second round. But he caught up in the last round and won a very close fight.

In the 118 lbs. Division, the title fight was between two Filipinos as no one else was left to fight them after yesterday?s elimination rounds. Rey Saludar beat his teammate, Gerson Nietes in a very hot contest between two good sluggers from the Visayas, one an Iloggo and the other a Cebuano.

The only Filipino who suffered a loss was Ricky Dulay. Dulay lost a very close fight against Leonardo Chavez of the Oscar de la Hoya Gym in East LA. Chavez thus won the 122 lbs Division.

The Team Boksing Pilipinas are leaving LA on Tuesday and will be heading home. Hopefully, when they get home and pay a courtesy call to their benefactor, Manny V. Pangilinan of the PLDT, bonuses will be forthcoming. They did very well and they deserved it.
