Donaire Jr. sets sights on Bantamweight Division By Socrates Celestial PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Jul 2010 In a phone interview, boxing coach and analyst Socrates Celestial caught up with Nonito Donaire Jr., ranked number four on the pound for pound rankings. Donaire Jr. was more than willing to show his eagerness for his fight on the Lopez vs. Concepcion card. Only days away and the long awaited return for Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire Junior (24-1; 15 KO) to impose his will onto the more than willing Hernan ?Tyson? Marquez (27-1; 20 KO). Donaire Jr. show?s great respect for the Mexican fighter stating: ?Marquez is a tough fighter with a good record. I?m training hard and will try to go with my advantages which are my speed, height and power.? Marquez?s only blemish comes recently to notable Filipino fighter, Richie Mepranum in March of this year. By no means is Donaire Jr. looking past this next fighter, which definitely poses a threat, but he has shown a strong interest in moving up to either the Bantamweight or Super-Bantamweight Division. Donaire explained that once this fight is over and he moves up in weight, ?the guy I would like to face is Fernando Montiel. Maybe gain another title and move up again and face the Canadian Steve Molitor?. Will the Filipino Flash ever consider fighting in Canada? This begs the question, how long until we see ?The Filipino Flash? on Canadian soil? He responded with ?I?ve spoken with several promoters and the negotiation process has to go through ?Top Rank?, but I think it would be cool to fight in Canada or in Toronto?. Within the last couple of years Filipino fighters such as Marvin Sonsona, Ciso Morales and most recently Ana Julaton have all found success north of the border. Filipino Canadians have welcomed this new import of world-class fighters into the Toronto area and the fighters as well have enjoyed their success? coming into Canada to fight. In some bouts winning world title belts. Donaire Jr. will first have to get through Marquez before any of those plans come to fruition. Marquez with such an impressive record could halt the plans of the highly successful pound-for-pound ranked fighter. The card is set with fellow Filipino fighter Bernabe Concepcion (28-3-1; 15 KO) to face the undefeated Puerto Rican Juan Manuel Lopez (28-0; 25 KO) this Saturday, July 10th 2010 in Puerto Rico. The two Filipino fighters will have tough fights in front of them with an opportunity to gain top-level status. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Socrates Celestial. |
