Another Braveheart Fighter Steps Out of Obscurity PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Jul 2010 Kidapawan City, North Cotabato - One by one, they march out of obscurity into the limelight. Barely a month after an unknown fighter from North Cotabato, Edrin "The Sting" Dapudong, 24, gave the country a pleasant weekend surprise by scoring a sensational 1st round knockout over World No. 1 Flyweight Jesus "The Destroyer" Jimenez in Mexico, another Braveheart Boxing Club boxer steps into the centerstage when he fights for the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Oriental Flyweight Championship on Aug. 1. Young Jermie "The Worm" Jabel, 22, (15 wins, 8 KOs, 1 draw), a tall flyweight who stands 5' 6", will go up against veteran Fernando Lumacad, 24, (21 wins, 8 KOs, 3 losses) in a 12-round championship bout for the vacant WBO Oriental 112-lb. title in M'lang, North Cotabato, hometown of Edrin Dapudong, the new World Boxing Council (WBC) Flyweight Silver Champion. The Jabel-Lumacad championship bout replaces the previously announced WBO Oriental Miniflyweight title defense of Rommel "Little Assassin" Asenjo, 21, against Bimbo Nacionales which has been deferred due an impending and expected big engagement for Asenjo. Jabel, a former member of the North Cotabato amateur boxing team who comes from the frontier town of Pigcawayan near the main camp of a secessionist rebel group in the Southern Philippines, is called "The Worm" because his uncanny ability to dig deep into the body of his opponent. A favorite boxer of Cuban coach Honorato Espinosa, who stayed in North Cotabato for 18 months to train local trainers and amateur boxers, Jabel holds the distinction of being one of the few boxers who defeated former world champion Marvin Sonsona in an amateur boxing bout. Jabel was not pushed to the centerstage of boxing early on because there were some concerns about his stamina and his fighting stance which Braveheart Boxing Club owner Manny Pinol wanted to be addressed before the fighter is given a big break. "I wanted him to mature a little more. Back then I felt that there were some loose ends in his endurance and stamina and his fighting stance. Jabel used to have a very weak leg foundation when fighting and chief trainer Noli Pinol and the assistant trainers were able to correct this," Manny said. "Now, he will be tested - his heart, power, stamina and endurance and his ability to withstand the pressure of a championship fight" he added. The draw in his record resulted from an accidental headbutt which caused a cut on Jabel prompting the referee to stop the fight. Lumacad, himself an outstanding amateur boxer, is a known stylish fighter and was considered a prospect for a world title until he was knocked out by veteran Jorge Arce in a fight last year in the US. In his last outing, Lumacad was outpointed by Mexico's Jose "Goofy" Montes in their fight for the WBC Youth Superflyweight Champion in Mexico. But still, Lumacad's fight record of 21 wins in 24 bouts with 8 KOs makes him a formidable opponent and a good test for Jabel. The Jabel-Lumacad bout will be the main undercard in the interesting match up between Lorenzo "Thunderbolt" Villanueva, 23 (18 wins, 17 KOs, 1 No Decision) and Balweg Bangoyan, 24 (15 wins, 8 KOs, 1 loss) for the WBO Oriental Featherweight Title which Villanueva is defending. Other Braveheart fighters seeing action in M'lang on Aug. 1 are junior featherweight Rolando "Smooth Operator" Magbanua, 25 (17 wins, 12 KOs, 1 loss), bantamweight Glenn "The Rock" Porras, 24, (23 wins, 15 KOs, 2 losses) junior featherweight Rey "The Bull" Juntilla, 21, (10 wins, 6 KOs, 1 draw); junior flyweight Gary "Chinito" Lumacad (no relation to Fernando), 22 (3 wins, 2 KOs, 0 loss) and bantamweight Phil Francis "Panther" Abanilla, 18 (1 win-0 loss). Four amateur bouts, featuring young boxing prospects, including 17-year-old national youth champion bantamweight Jomer Lumacad, younger brother of Gary, will also be included in the card staged by M'lang Mayor Lito Pinol and Magpet Mayor Efren Pinol in celebration of M'lang's foundational anniversary and the world championship victory of Dapudong. ![]() |
