WORLD POOL: SEVEN PINOYS MAKE IT TO ROUND OF 16

PhilBoxing.com

Lanky Ronnie Alcano, winner of the 2006 World Pool Championship at the Philippine International Convention Center when he routed Europe?s No.1 Ralf ?The Kaiser? Souquet became the seventh Pinoy pool player to advance to the round of 16 in the World Pool Championships in Doha, Qatar.

Alcano ended a surge by the Filipino players by winning the final match in the round of 32 beating China?s Dang Jinhu 11-7. However, the unfortunate news is that with seven Filipinos in the pre- quarter finals stage, they would be drawn against each other.

Perhaps the unkindest cut of all was that pool legend Francisco ?Django? Bustamante was drawn to face-off with Marlon Manalo whom he beat handily 11-6 while Franciso Felicida was still playing Raymund Faron in all-Filipino showdowns which will mean two local bets will be eliminated going into the quarter finals.

Alcano barged into the quarter finals with a rousing 11-6 over Christian Reimering of Germany mering of Germanyg and Lining was leading Dimitri Jungo 9-7 as of this posting...

Earlier Report:

Six Pinoy pool standouts are cueing in on the top prize of $36,000 in the 2010 World Pool Championships in Doha, Qatar with 2006 champion Ronnie Alcano still to play Dang Jinhu of China and Venancio Tanio who ousted German ace Ralf Souquet 11-9 ready to face Japan?s Hayato Hijikata.

Leading the Philippine charge and enhancing the country?s reputation as the epicenter of pool is billiards 9-ball legend Francisco ?Django? Bustamante who played some outstanding pool to show 2008 World Pool Junior champion Ko Pin Yi of Chinese-Taipei how to handle tournament pressure with a 11-8 victory to move into the round of 16.

Bustamante, winner of the 23rd Annual Japan Open had earlier routed German machine Oliver Ortmann in a one-sided 11-2 thrashing to prove he is a contender for the big money.

Another big winner was Marlon Manalo who lived up to his nickname by playing some marvelous pool to defeat American hope Shane Van Boening ?The South Dakota Kid? who had no answer to the youthful master from Mandaluyong City.

Antonio ?Nikoy? Lining who has been playing the Japan circuit through the years with considerable success proved far too steady for Vietnam?s Nguyen P. Long and won comfortably 11-6.

In an all-Filipino showdown Francisco Felicilda proved steadier in the clutches and to win an 11-10 cliffhanger over flamboyant Jeffrey De Luna while Oliver Medenialla who is wearing the colors of the United Arab Emirates in the WPC Championships overcame Thailand?s surprise package Nitiwat Kanjanasri 11-9.

In another scrambling finish Raymund Faron ended the winning streak of Britain?s Scott Higgins with a pulsating 11-10 victory and with Alcano and Tanio still to play, its been Sunday sweet Sunday for the Philippines after earlier seeing such stars as Efren ?Bata? Reyes, Dennos Orcollo and Lee Van Corteza fail to advance in a fiercely competitive tournament.

Reyes, the greatest pool player of all-time appeared to have the measure of veteran Johnny Archer in the early stages of his match where he opened up a three-rack lead but Archer steadied his game and as Reyes appeared to tire the American pulled off another epic win 11-0.

Lee Van Corteza was literally blasted off the table by big Tony Drago of Malta who raced to an 11-7 win while Orcollo, the 2010 World Pool Masters champion surprisingly succumbed to the Italian Bruno Muratore who has been playing some excellent pool in Doha.
